Fretheim Hotel
4.5/5126 Reviews
Stately and elegant in white, Fretheim stands so close to the Flamsbana train station and the pier that you immediately see it as you step off either boat or train. it has a pretty flower garden in front with tables and chairs you can 'park' in for minutes or hours. There's a cozy but spacious lobby with a fireplace where guests waiting for their train or express boat ride can sit in comfort with enough privacy. The front desk staff are very accommodating and take the time to explain things, even though most of their guests are there for only one night. The rooms are standard sized with great balconies that overlook the village center-cum pier and train station. Furniture is standard but the amenities are pretty basic - there's no fridge, no coffee machine (though there's a hot water pot with instant coffee). There's wifi but pretty slow. Checkout time is a bit earlier, at 11 am. The breakfast has a very good spread, with a wide assortment of vegetables and good hot food selection. Plus so many variations of salmon which was impressive. We also found out that you could buy a paper bag and stuff it with a make-your-own sandwich so you could do a picnic lunch while touring the fjords - nice option. A big plus was the walking trail behind the hotel which got you to a higher elevation that gave a great view of the lake and the village center. You could walk for an entire hour without repeating your walk. Several had commented on the need for an update but I didn't notice this.
Flåmsbrygga Hotel
4.4/5104 Reviews
The Flåmsbana arrives (or begins) in the tourist area of the tiny village of Flåm. There’s shopping, food trucks, restaurants and beautiful vistas. This is the hopping off point for fjord cruises, kayak tours, Fjord safari rides (this means ride in a rigid inflatable boat like a zodiac but bigger built for tourists to see the fjords fast), hiking trails, biking rentals and more. This is also a cruise ship port so reserve your table for dinner before you go. We stayed in the Flåmsbrygga Hotel in early June 2023. Our room was quite nice and having a pleasant balcony with a view made it excellent. We ate at the next door Æ Bryggeripub where they also brew excellent beer. The food was delicious, the service very good and the decor intriguing. In our opinion, it is a must do to enjoy an overnight in this village and enjoy a delightful dinner in this pub where they brought Norse mythology to modern design effectively.

Amazing hotel ! I felt like Viking ! The view from room was TOP!!! It was an amazing experience! The staff very friendly! The hotel so close to Viking valley not even 1 minute on foot ! I m happy that I made it and visited this fab place 🤍 It was so beautiful even if I went during November! During summer will be perfect! As I know is more crowded and there are many events in Viking Valley ! I stayed only one night just because I wanted to visit the valley and this hotel honestly made me feel the vibe of Vikings
Vatnahalsen Høyfjellshotell

It's a quaint inaccessible place with dark corridors, visible plumbing and rooms that needed a makeover long, long ago. It is only reachable by using the expensive Flåm Railway, or walking or riding 20 kilometres. It was originally built as a sanatorium in 1896, but it was never used for its intended purpose. Instead, it became popular as a hotel because of the Bergen Railway. After the Bergen Railway was opened in 1909, and especially after the Flåm Railway was connected with the Bergen Railway in 1940 it became a go to destination but times, tastes and fortune change. My first impression; I thought I was in an old folks home. It's on different floor levels within so one goes up/down a few steps to get to different rooms. It's not for wheelchair users. We arrived here without any welcome as 'cash cows'. We were part of the Flåm £15O a head railway trip off as guests of Norwegian Prima. Our train guide walked us up a slope from the station, in the rain, into the hotel, on a wet dank afternoon, only to tell us to go down two floors inside, for rather poor - tasting filtered cool coffee that sat on the tables in flasks. As we were cash cows other cash cows who were there from an earlier Flam train trip had blocked the narrow hallway which was annoying given the cold rain and wind as we were held outside jostling to get in. As we were a crowd we were put in an ugly nondescript room packed tight with fellow travellers. It resembled a school assembly hall with a public sector school dinner approach. So once we got into the downstairs room allocated for us we poured flasked coffee into tiny hotel style cold cups ending up with lukewarm lousy coffee which is unpleasant. If the (cold, limp, thin) waffles that sat plated on a top table were loving made fresh by the hotel's chef, from the finest flour, mountain butter and cream, treacly cane sugar from Mauritius and fresh free range double yolked XL eggs from happy chickens living their best life on a mountain side then sadly it isn't working as these potentially microwaved limp offerings had all the hallmarks of vegetable oil and powdered egg factory manufacturing. The raspberry jam (I expected cloudberry) and runny sour cream helped but honestly if you were served this stuff in a local cafe you'd be reluctant to pay and you wouldn't return. Given it's a £150 a head they have a cheek serving this rubbish. Having loitered here two hours and looked around the hotel and its surroundings to relieve boredom I was glad ours was a brief visit. If the food served to guests is anything like the poor quality we got it has little going for it except the location. We have no desire to return.
Scandic Sunnfjord Hotel & Spa
3.9/555 Reviews
We enjoyed our stay at Sunnfjord Hotel and Spa. Swimming pool at ground floor and spa next door with assorted treatments and a nice relax area with swimming pool, sauna, in- and outdoor jacuzzi etc. Small, but clean and modern rooms. Very nice breakfast. Newly upgraded concert hall/ballroom/party facilities at the 4. floor. The hotel is situated in centre of Førde, close to shops etc. and the Sogn and Fjordane Art Museum. Perfect starting point for trips in the area and hiking in the mountains. Appr. 3 hour drive from Bergen.
Thon Partner Hotel Måløy

OK, the façade and the location don't give much. But for that the hotel is top inside. It seems to be completely re-renoved. We had a very large room with a very large modern bathroom. Breakfast buffet was also innocent. We would book again at any time.

Kviknes Hotel

This hotel may be the best Balestrand has to offer but it is tired. We did not book this by choice but were here for an event. Had there been any way possible to stay elsewhere and drive back and forth we would have done so. We came by ferry and were trapped as there are no car rentals available on Saturdays and Sundays. Weekdays you can get them at nearby airports but the closest one is an hour by car and taxis are not readily available. We were stuck in a room in the modern building. The rooms in the historic building are better. The door to the room from the hallway is a 24 inch flat panel door as is the one to the bathroom. The hangars are the kind that are fixed to the bar so they cannot be stolen. There are no wash cloths or bath mats. For 2 people you receive one bath and one hand towel each for your stay. We requested additional towels to shower one morning after being there two nights. After waiting an hour none had arrived. The only amenity is hand soap in a locked dispenser - they must think people would want to steal the soap. The room feels like that of a bad cruise ship. The shower is 24 x 20 inches. It would be much better to remove the surround and simply have a euro style shower with no glass and the fixtures only attached to the bath walls. It wouldn't feel so cramped. Other European hotels have small rooms which is okay if they are fresh and inviting. This most certainly is not. There is no safe for valuables so you must carry them with you at all times or take the risk.
Gudvangen Budget Hotel

Quite basic but very clean and well serviced hotel. We were a bit concerned beforehand about the shared toilets/shower thing, but this proved to be groundless. The shared facilities, like the rooms, were kept very clean and other guests were very discreet and equally mindful too. A bonus was the free use of the washing machine and tumble dryer; very much appreciated. The Budget Hotel is owned by the Fjordtell down on the waterfront, in fact they seem to own the whole complex, with all food options shared and very nice. We’re glad we stayed where we did; cheaper but no less cleanliness or room facilities. An enjoyable two night stay and a very good base for Gudvangen/Flam.
