The rental car building is conveniently located, just one stop from Terminal 5 at the airport via a shuttle train. You can also return to the airport in the same way after returning the car. Hertz's signage is clear, and the paperwork is quick. However, the staff recommends towing insurance, which is unnecessary. Picking up and returning the car was simple. The Volvo S60 I chose was very new and clean, a 24-year-old with only 9,000 miles on it. The rental company said that toll road fees, if paid in advance at the counter, would cost $89, so they had us pay online. We later linked our credit card online, and sure enough, a one-way trip from Chicago to Champaign was only $7.50. Before returning to Chicago, we filled up the tank, and then filled it again near the rental company before returning the car. You have to return the car with a full tank, otherwise they'll charge for the fuel and the labor cost for filling it up. However, the gas stations near the rental company were outrageous; in Champaign, it was $3.16 per gallon, while the BP gas station near the rental company was $4.50 per gallon. Luckily, I didn't fill it up much, and since I wasn't familiar with the area, I didn't specifically look for other gas stations. Everything was great, the whole car rental process was very pleasant, and the $200 deposit pre-authorization was lifted one day after returning the car.
