BOOM! A Film About the Sonics – 1960s Garage Band Documentary! | Philosophical Research Society
Jan 16, 2025 (UTC-8)
Boulevard
BOOM! A Film About the Sonics – 1960s Garage Band Documentary! BOOM! A Film About the Sonics (77 min., dir. Jordan Albertsen). Before Nirvana and The White Stripes, before The Ramones and The Cramps, before The Stooges and the Velvet Underground – there were The Sonics, arguably the loudest, most primitive and most subversive American proto-punk, proto-garage band of the 1960s. Formed in Tacoma, Washington in 1960 and part of the Northwest music scene that included The Wailers and Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Sonics literally detonated on the airwaves with screaming, fuzz-stoked classics such as “Psycho,” “The Witch,” Strychnine” and “Have Love Will Travel” – still, 60 years later, among the rawest slabs of American rock ‘n roll ever recorded. BOOM! chronicles one of rock ‘n roll’s wildest and most influential bands -- and for the first time ever, all five original members explore how a relatively unknown band from the Pacific Northwest became a worldwide phenomenon 50-years later, shaping music for decades to come. Featuring interviews with homegrown heroes and breakthrough artists alike, including Pearl Jam, The Sex Pistols, Heart, Mudhoney and many, many more who were inspired and influenced by The Sonics’ gloriously unhinged sound. W.W. Harmon’s Esoteric Manuscript – An Illustrated Presentation | Philosophical Research Society
Jan 23, 2025 (UTC-8)
Boulevard
W.W. Harmon’s Esoteric Manuscript – An Illustrated Presentation by Devon Deimler, PhD, Matt Marble, PhD and Michael Carter, MFA “We cannot see things spiritual with the eyes of the flesh. The occultist in studying even the physical body must use the eyes of the spiritual intelligence.” – William W. Harmon In 1891, an optometrist and scholar named William W. Harmon began work on what would become a truly monumental metaphysical manuscript which has been hidden from sight for over 130 years. 284 pages in length, hand illustrated with gorgeous watercolors – some abstract in the style of Swedish artist Hilma af Klint, others gloriously mystical in the style of William Blake – the “Esoteric Manuscript” as it’s currently labeled in the PRS Library Collections, is one of the great lost works of American esoteric art and writing. Although he was known to Manly P. Hall and other members of esoteric circles in the early 20th century – Harmon contributed articles to Hall’s journal The All-Seeing Eye in the late 1920s – his work was, and continues to be, almost completely unknown outside of the metaphysical world. In 1949, scholar A.J. Howie wrote this about Harmon in Horizon, the PRS journal: “He was one of the first students of Theosophy in the United States to receive a copy of The Secret Doctrine. … Apparently because of his profession, he seems to have speculated considerably on the principles of light and color, with frequent references to tonal equivalents. Remembering that Harmon started these notes in 1891, his frequent use of the word ‘atomic’ in an almost current sense is remarkable.” At some point after Harmon completed this massive work of mystical illustration and writing, the manuscript entered the collection of Manly P. Hall and PRS, where it’s remained in the Library vault for decades. The quality of Harmon’s watercolor illustrations in the “Esoteric Manuscript” is stunning: dazzling rays of spectral light emanate from golden orbs, wheels of color rotate around a Zodiac. Notes of music are bent around a Constructivist machine or the inner workings of some surreal pocket watch. A mystical figure emerges from an Orphic egg holding a glowing wand – only for the page to be opened to reveal yet another figure inside, and another inside that. As a work of esoteric and metaphysical art and illustration, Harmon’s never-before-seen manuscript is absolutely breathtaking and astonishing. According to artist and esoteric scholar Michael Carter, “The manuscript is a seemingly singular historic document of the early New Age in America and it’s basically unknown outside of a small circle of people who have seen it in person at PRS.” Please join us for a special illustrated presentation and discussion about this incredibly rare manuscript by writer and artist Devon Deimler, PhD, artist and director of the American Museum of Paramusicology Matt Marble, PhD, and artist and esoteric scholar Michael Carter, MFA. Devon Deimler is a writer, artist, and researcher. She earned her PhD in Mythological Studies with an emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute with a dissertation on Dionysian aesthetics. She holds a BA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her experience in the arts includes founding an independent record label, Wildfire Wildfire Productions, and working as Assistant to the Director at the Dennis Hopper Art Trust. She is Associate Core Faculty in Pacifica Graduate Institute’s Mythological Studies and Depth Psychology and Creativity programs; Curator at OPUS Archives and Research Center; and former Scholar-in-Residence and a Contributing Artist at the Philosophical Research Society. Matt Marble is an artist, author, audio producer, and director of the American Museum of Paramusicology ( brilliant and humbling, The Paris Review). Both creatively and through historical research, his work explores the inspired intersections of art and metaphysics and the intuitive disciplines they mutually employ. Matt is the author of Buddhist Bubblegum: Esotericism in the Creative Process of Arthur Russell ( groundbreaking work, New York Times), and the producer/host of Secret Sound, a podcast exploring the metaphysical biographies of American musicians. His writing, research, media production, and personal archive constitute the American Museum of Paramusicology, through which he also publishes the monthly AMP Journal. Matt holds a BA in Speech & Hearing Science from Portland State University, a PhD in music composition from Princeton University, and a black rattlesnake from his dreams. Michael Carter is an artist and educator working in installation, objects, and performance. He received his MFA from Claremont Graduate University. Carter's work addresses metaphysical theories of art and the cultural roots of science, philosophy, and religion in modernity to the contemporary. His artworks and performances investigate and integrate the traditions of new age spirituality with a criticality born of scientific practices. Carter's artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally including Nicodim Gallery, Rusha & Co., JOAN, The Floating Gallery, Leband Gallery at Loyola Marymount University, Machine Project, and the Hansell Gallery. He has given talks and lectures at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Ojai Valley Theosophical Lodge, and the Philosophical Research Society. How to Paint Space - Illustrated Presentation by Lois Rosson | Philosophical Research Society
Jan 30, 2025 (UTC-8)
Boulevard
How to Paint Space: American Astronomical Illustration and Cultures of Scientific Visualization – Illustrated Presentation by Lois Rosson For much of the space age, the fastest way to produce a high-resolution image of an alien landscape was to have someone paint it by hand. This lecture by noted science and technology historian Lois Rosson is a history of American astronomical illustration, a genre of image-making that functioned simultaneously as scientific visualization while reshaping the look of outer space in popular culture. But how do you paint a realistic-looking picture of a landscape you’ve never seen? In the second half of the twentieth century, artists had a remarkable influence on the appearance of the space environment. The history of astronomical illustration spotlights how the creation of accurate or trustworthy images is often a deeply human process. The lecture spans Chesley Bonestell’s collaborations with Werner von Braun in the 1940s, lunar mapping efforts at the USGS Branch of Astrogeology during Project Apollo, and the formation of the International Association of Astronomical Artists in the 1980s. This is many ways a story about Southern California, and the special triangulation between government funded spaceflight, commercial aerospace, and the Hollywood special effects industry. Lois Rosson is a historian of science and technology based in Los Angeles, where she is a field historian for the NASA History Office. At NASA, Lois is working on a history of the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), and supporting the agency's next flagship science mission, the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO). Her current book project traces the impact of Los Angeles' art and special effects industry on the look of the space environment in planetary science and popular culture. She has held the Guggenheim Predoctoral Fellowship at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, and the Octavia E. Butler Fellowship at the Huntington Library. Her work has been supported by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the Berggruen Institute, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Southern California. An Evening with Christiane Cegavske feat. BLOOD TEA AND RED STRING! | Philosophical Research Society
Jan 8, 2025 (UTC-8)
Boulevard
Praise for BLOOD TEA AND RED STRING:
“A David Lynchean fever dream on Beatrix Potter terrain” – Variety
“A dark tale of white mice, sylvan creatures and a stolen goddess” – New York Times
“An original head trip” – New York Post
“Cegavske’s creative magic explodes on the screen” – Fangoria
“Its haunting images speak directly to some dark, preverbal corner of the heart” – TV Guide
The Philosophical Research Society is proud to present a very special evening with artist and filmmaker Christiane Cegavske, featuring the LA theatrical premiere of the new restoration of her beloved debut stop-motion animated feature BLOOD TEA AND RED STRING (2006), a sneak peek of her much anticipated forthcoming film SEED IN THE SAND, and an in-depth artist talk and Q&A! A surreal handmade fairy tale for adults, BLOOD TEA AND RED STRING was created and animated entirely by Cegavske over a period of 13 years. It tells the story of aristocratic white mice who commission gentle oak dwelling artisans to create a doll for them. When the Oak Dwellers fall in love with the doll they refuse to give her up. Resorting to thievery, the jilted mice abscond with her in the middle of the night. The Oak Dwellers must journey through their mystical and dangerous land to reclaim their love. The film has grown in its acclaim since its release nearly 20 years ago, when it won Best Animated Film in the San Francisco Independent Film Festival, Best Director in Spudfest Film Festival and Silver Public’s Prize in Fantasi International Film Festival. It received rave reviews in the New York Times, New York Post, Variety, Fangoria, Cartoon Brew and many more. It’s routinely included in critic’s lists including: “10 Best Stop Motion Films” according to Letterboxd reviewers; “49 Best Animated Movies of All Time” according to Rotten Tomatoes critics; 7 Best Stop-Motion Animated Movies of All Time, Cinemaholic; 8 Best Sci-Fi Films With Minimal Dialogue, Syfy; 15 Best Surrealist Movies of The 21st Century, Taste of Cinema, Top 17+ Animated Horror Movies, Creepy Catalog; 10 Stunning Animated Movies Directed by Women, Screen Rant; and Animated films by Solo Artists, Cartoon Brew. The film is dialogue-free, which has enabled it to reach audiences worldwide and allows viewers to find their own interpretations of the story. It features a heart-rending musical score composed and performed by Mark Growden. Now considered a modern cult classic, it has garnered an enthusiastic following who create Blood Tea and Red String fan art, tattoos, costumes, poems and songs, and tea parties. With her forthcoming feature, SEED IN THE SAND (sneak peek this evening!), Cegavske once more taps into the mysterious possibilities of stop-motion animation. To save a dying world, a creature sails across a sea of sand to bring a magical pod to the mythical realm of his dreams. Doll sirens sing and sand waves crash on rocky shores in a dreamlike world that is part dystopian science fiction and part magical fable. Join us for this intimate evening with its creator, Christiane Cegavske, and experience her precious gem of stop-motion surrealism on the big screen! ABOUT CHRISTIANE CEGAVSKE Director Christiane Cegavske is known for her stop-motion animated films including the features Blood Tea and Red String (2006) and Seed in the Sand (in progress). She created the short films “A Dream of Dolls Dancing,” “Blood and Sunflowers,” “Coyote,” and “The Dollmaker.” Cegavske was Director of Animation on the animated dream sequences for Asia Argento’s film The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things. Cegavske’s Blood Tea and Red String is the only stop-motion feature film created and animated solely by one person. It is a handmade stop-motion fairy tale for adults described as “a David Lynchean fever dream on Beatrix Potter terrain” (Variety); “Cegavske’s creative magic explodes on the screen” (Fangoria); and “as much a work of sculpture as of cinema” (The New York Times). In 2019, Cegavske was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for her filmmaking. In 2021 in Los Angeles and 2022 in Oakland, Cegavske created immersive solo gallery shows which incorporated video projections and props from her animated films.
