Bike Ride to Chadkirk Chapel | Thornfield Park, Thornfield Road, Heaton Mersey, Stockport, UK
Jul 27, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Stockport
Join the exhilarating Bike Ride to Chadkirk Chapel, a pedal-powered adventure through the scenic green spaces of Stockport. This off-road route takes you along national cycle trails, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature before arriving at the historic Chadkirk Church near Marple. On this captivating journey, you will pass by two medieval Halls and ultimately reach the remarkable 16th Century Chadkirk Chapel, where you can witness the fascinating well dressing tradition. The route guides you along the picturesque Trans Pennine Trail alongside the River Mersey, through Stockport Town Centre, and then reconnects with the Trail along the River Tame. As you make your way through Reddish Vale Park, you'll have the opportunity to visit Bredbury Hall, a site mentioned in the Domesday Book, as well as Goyt Hall, where a delightful coffee hut awaits (if open). The gravel trails continue until you cross the main road into Chadkirk. Although the Chapel is typically only open to the public on the last Sunday of the month, our ride coincides with the annual Dressing of the Well event. This enchanting occasion commences at noon and concludes at 5pm, with the formal well dressing ceremony occurring at 1pm. The event promises a delightful array of performances by the Stockport Silver Band, Stockport Ukulele Players, and Stockport Morris Men. Moreover, stalls will be selling a variety of locally grown plants, second-hand books, cards, paintings, crafts, Chadkirk Comfrey Oil, and Chadkirk Elderflower Cordial. Families are especially welcome to join in the festivities. The Bike Ride to Chadkirk Chapel offers an accessible route suitable for riders of all skill levels, primarily on gravel cycle paths. While there are a few main roads to cross and a short steep section that may require dismounting, the captivating scenery along the Etherow-Goyt Valley way more than compensates for any challenges. Prepare for a truly serene experience as you traverse the picturesque countryside and follow the tranquil paths of Stockport's rivers - the Mersey, the Tame, and the Goyt. Remember to bring a roadworthy bike, a drink, and a picnic lunch for the ride. Please note that cash is the only form of payment accepted at Chadkirk Chapel. Additionally, it is advisable to bring a bike lock should you wish to explore the surroundings while at Chadkirk. Prepare for the weather accordingly, as the ride takes place rain or shine. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to embark on a memorable bike ride to Chadkirk Chapel – a journey that combines history, nature, and community in one captivating experience.
