Join us for a delightful afternoon of Easter fun at our Easter Egg Cookie Decorating event with the Easter Bunny on April 19th from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM at the Back Porch! Fourth Annual Gatsby Gala Fundraiser Saturday, April 26 - Doors Open at 6pm • Brooke Whiting House, 632 Washington Street It's that time again, when the Historical Society opens the Brooke Whiting House to recreate our community's peak of affluence through lens of a great American novel, “The Great Gatsby.” The glitter and glam of the Roaring 20s carried a dark shadow that F. Scott Fitzgerald channeled in a book that is now understood to semi-autobiographical about his tumultuous life with wife Zelda. Dress in your best 1920s outfits and re-live what a racy 1929 prohibition party was like as guests of F. Brooke Whiting and Ruth Whiting in their 1911 home. This was Cumberland’s boom time, and the Whitings were active in everything from banking to beer brewing. Known simply as “Gatsby”, this event has become a must do social gathering for all the right reasons! Surprise arrivals. Great food. An amazing setting among Brooke Whiting Jr and his sister Anne’s collections of art, books and furnishings, astutely acquired from American antiquities dealers, and during their world travels between 1948 and 1990. Proceeds benefit the Allegany County Historical Society’s preservation and educational mission, as established beginning in 1937. Attendance capacity is limited so don’t delay.
