Latest Events in Frankfurt(July Updated)

The Main Festival, held along the Main River boulevard, Faltor Square, and Römerberg, is one of Frankfurt's oldest public festivals. Today, the Main Festival and its large summer gardens along the river offer a wonderful way to experience the Main and its surrounding scenery. The consecration of the Church of the Three Kings (Dreikönigskirche) on July 23, 1340, is considered the origin of the Main Festival. Fishermen and boatmen developed their fishing festival as a way to express their reverence for "the river and its gifts." Celebrations include roasted beef, wine made from Main spring water, performances of Passion plays by schoolchildren in "Himmelreich huts" (cabins), goose plucking, duck fishing, firecrackers, fireworks, and colorful processions of four to six people along the banks of the Main.

Around 170 exceptional paintings, drawings, photographs, and historical documents on loan from leading French, German and other international museums as well as several private collections are on display in the exhibition. Among them are no fewer than twenty-four works by Claude Monet. In addition to works by Eugène Delacroix, Gustave Courbet, and Henri Matisse, the exhibition brings together a host of other important figures in modern and contemporary art, including Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Eugène Le Poittevin, as well as Camille Corot, Eugène Boudin and Elger Esser.
