Exhibitions
This exhibition offers a new, revealing look at the world-class Portland Collection of art. The museum will be filled to the brim with fascinating art and objects, a giant cabinet of curiosities. There will be silver and tapestry, paintings and jewels; art that has come home after a long loan to a prestigious national gallery, and stunning star items that visitors know and love – such as Michelangelo’s ‘Madonna of Silence’ or the pearl earring worn by Charles I at his execution. A highlight of the display is a Picture Gallery, stacked with Tudor and Jacobean portraits – many of which have never been seen publicly before.

The Harley Pottery Studio presents the 6-week Introduction to Pottery, a weekly course specially designed for beginners who are eager to explore the world of clay art. This comprehensive course offers a unique opportunity to learn various hand-building techniques, such as pinch, coiling, and slab building, along with a focus on surface texture and color. Each week, participants will be introduced to a new skill that can be personalized to reflect their individual style. The course takes place over six consecutive Wednesday afternoons or Friday mornings, starting on the selected date. The course fee includes all the necessary materials, including clay, as well as glazing and firing for up to six items. For those interested in glazing and firing additional pieces, there is a nominal fee based on the size of the object. Moreover, participants have the option to extend their studio time with the Self-Guided Studio Access, which allows for independent work in the studio. Although this session is not led by an instructor, tutor support will be available upon request, ensuring a fulfilling experience for all participants. The Friday morning course is taught by Ruth Waller, an accomplished contemporary textile artist and co-founder of Waller Hewett. Ruth's expertise and creativity have earned her numerous awards, including 'Best in Show' at the London Craft Fair. On Wednesday afternoons, Dee Barnes, a talented ceramicist and experienced tutor, guides participants through the Introduction to Pottery course. Dee's background in classical and contemporary dance adds a unique perspective to her creations. To secure a place in this exceptional pottery course, participants are required to complete a short registration form upon booking. The event is partially funded by Inspire: Libraries, Museums, and Culture, and its accessibility and affordability are made possible through the generous support of Nottinghamshire County Council. Embrace the opportunity to learn the art of pottery in the inspiring surroundings of The Harley Pottery Studio. Located in the idyllic countryside of Worksop, this community space is surrounded by practicing artists and makers, providing an enriching environment for creativity to flourish. Don't miss this chance to embark on a fulfilling journey into the world of pottery.
