Illuminate: A Professional Development Day for Disabled Visual Artists is a highly anticipated event taking place in Sleaford at the Hub on November 23, 2023. This exclusive gathering, spearheaded by Jo Tolley and Creative Rebel CIC, has been made possible by the generous support of Lincolnshire One Venues. In collaboration with the Hub and Contemporary Visual Arts Network East Midlands, Illuminate aims to empower disabled artists through professional growth opportunities.
The day will commence with a warm welcome at 10:15 am, followed by an engaging session where participants will have the chance to delve into their artistic practices and set their expectations for the day ahead. The excitement continues with a captivating Digital Arts & Practice Workshop from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Led by renowned digital artist Jason Wilsher-Mills, this workshop will utilize iPads and Procreate to explore Jason's unique artistic style and practice, which seamlessly integrates sculpture, augmented-reality, 3D painting, traditional painting, murals, and cinematography. Jason's work centers around themes of activism, accessibility, disability rights, and representation.
After the workshop, attendees will have the privilege of engaging in a fireside chat from 12:45 pm to 1:15 pm. Jo Tolley will host a thought-provoking conversation with Jason, delving into his artistic journey and practice. This insightful dialogue promises to provide valuable insights and inspiration to all participants.
The afternoon will be dedicated to discussion sessions from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in two key topics: Commissioning & Professional Practice, led by Sam Lindley, Creative Director of Threshold, Sally Denton, Executive Director of Barbican Creative Hub, and a representative from the Contemporary Visual Arts Network. The second discussion session, Inclusive Curation & Accessibility, will be facilitated by Marion Sander, Programme Manager of the Hub, Rebecca Beinart, Engagement Curator of Primary, and Jennifer Gleadell, Exhibitions and Interpretation Officer of Lincoln Museum.
The event will conclude at 4:15 pm with a comprehensive summary of the day's discussions and a glimpse into the future. The Hub, Sleaford, which is part of the Lincolnshire One Venues network, will host Illuminate. As an accessible exhibition and education center, it serves as a national hub for craft and design, showcasing contemporary artists and makers from around the world.
Please note that while refreshments will be provided, participants are kindly requested to bring their own lunch to accommodate diverse dietary needs. A maximum of 10 places are available for this event, and each ticket includes admission for up to two support workers/carers in addition to the named participant.
