Join the captivating journey of two women embarking on a road trip in an electric car, seeking closure and reconciliation. Immerse yourself in the compelling narrative of Typist Artist Pirate King, a remarkable British film set to be released in 2022. Written and directed by the talented Carol Morley, this cinematic masterpiece features an exceptional cast including Monica Dolan, Kelly Macdonald, and Gina McKee. Typist Artist Pirate King draws inspiration from the intriguing life of Audrey Amiss, an avant-garde artist who faced both misunderstanding and admiration. While studying at the esteemed Royal Academy of Arts, Amiss's artistic pursuits were tragically interrupted by her battle with mental illness. In 2013, she passed away, leaving behind an extensive collection of artwork and writings. These precious creations were discovered posthumously and generously donated to the renowned Wellcome Collection. Situated on 183 Euston Road in London, Wellcome Collection showcases an extraordinary blend of medical artifacts and original artworks, exploring the profound intersection of medicine, life, and art. In this thought-provoking film, the title, Typist Artist Pirate King, stems from Amiss's passport, where she boldly listed her occupation as a typist, artist, and pirate king. The narrative takes us on an imaginary road trip alongside Amiss and her devoted psychiatric nurse, allowing us to revisit significant moments and reconnect with key individuals from Amiss's past. The Guardian hails this film as "warm and sympathetic," skillfully blending dark humor and tragicomic elements, resulting in a truly unforgettable cinematic experience. Be part of the Typist Artist Pirate King screening at Barnstaple Library on 24th February 2024. Discover the power of storytelling as you delve into this 12a-rated film. Doors open at 13:45, and refreshments will be available. The film will commence at 14:00, with an approximate duration of 1 hour and 45 minutes. Following the screening, an informal audience discussion will provide an opportunity for reflection and conversation.
