Barranquilla Carnival | Barranquilla
Celebration
The Barranquilla Carnival will officially take place from Saturday, February 14 to Tuesday, February 17, 2026, but celebrations begin weeks earlier, featuring events such as the reading of the proclamation and the coronation of the Carnival King. The carnival includes more than 500 artistic and cultural activities, including parades, concerts, and folk gatherings. Here are some highlights not to be missed:
[Proclamation Reading] This marks the official start of the carnival. The Carnival Queen announces the opening of the festivities with a lively and traditional speech. The opening ceremony is held at Peace Square and attracts thousands of spectators.
[La Guacherna] One of the most anticipated events. This nighttime parade features dazzling lights, captivating music, and spectacular dance performances as a tribute to Barranquilla's sweetheart, Esthercita Forero. It serves as the prelude to the carnival and takes place on the Friday before the carnival begins.
[Battle of Flowers] The most iconic parade kicks off Saturday's celebrations. Decorated floats, folk groups, and local beauty queens parade along Route 40, presenting a colorful, joyous festival full of song and dance.
[Traditional and Folkloric Grand Parade] On Sunday, Route 40 is filled with performing groups representing the roots of Caribbean Colombian culture: Cumbia, Garabato, Congo, and Mapalé dances.
[Joselito Carnaval's Funeral] The festivities conclude on Tuesday with a symbolic ceremony bidding farewell to Joselito, the character embodying the spirit of the carnival. This event closes the celebration with humor, drama, and vibrant music.
