The Silves Medieval Market, one of Portugal's most vibrant and prestigious medieval markets, returns this summer. This all-ages extravaganza takes place from August 7th to 15th in the historic city center and around Silves Castle. Visitors can participate in activities recreating events from centuries ago, when Silves was the capital of the Algarve Kingdom. Moorish and Christian traditions are showcased throughout the castle. Families can enjoy veiled dancers, snake charmers, jugglers, acrobats, and processions of elegantly dressed noblemen and women. Local delicacies can also be sampled at numerous food stalls. The theme for 2026 is "Silves – City of Poets and Wise Men" (Silves being the Moorish name for Silves). This theme evokes the city's history as one of Andalusia's most important academic centers, where libraries, gardens, and educational institutions became gathering places for poets, philosophers, jurists, musicians, and scientists who symbolized prestige and power through words and knowledge.

The Silvis Medieval Market, located in the Algarve, is one of Portugal's longest-running markets, typically held during the first half of August. In 2026, the market lasted nine days, from August 7th to 15th. Due to the hot climate of the Algarve region, the market's activities are mainly concentrated in the evenings, creating a unique natural atmosphere against the backdrop of the beautiful Silvis Castle.

From August 26th to 30th, for five consecutive nights, the Castellon hilltop castle and the San Sebastián Fortress below it transformed into a complete medieval town, hosting the 27th "Medieval Days" event. This is one of the largest historical reenactments in the Portuguese calendar. The event features tournaments, street theater, firework displays, falconry, Arabic-Iberian music and dance performances, and antique and handicraft markets throughout the streets. The San Sebastián Fortress also recreates scenes of 17th-century Restoration life, with costume shows throughout the day. In the evenings, a special area within the city walls hosts a medieval feast with torches, featuring traditional dishes and live entertainment.
