Healing is communal, healing is spiritual, healing is in the body and in spaces in between, healing is to be in harmony with plants and nature. “What do you feel when you think about the spiritual power of plants and ancestry?” Artists community Fazle Shairmahomed is researching a collective artwork in the form of a ritual, in this BAU AIR DOTE residency. Together with plant spirits and the artists-in-community: Anima Jhagroe-Ruissen, Farah Rahman, Shaymaa Shoukry, Ahmad Saleh, Natasja van 't Westende, Agnes Matthews and others from varied communities. Spiritual process of decolonization Fazle developed a new focus in their long-term artistic research into the spiritual process of decolonization in 2022, by deepening their relationship with plants in relation to that journey. Fazle invited people from different communities, in which they have been invested, to support them in the collective work Fertile Ground /: A personal research into the spiritual relationship between the Snake Plant (Vrouwentong), which their Nani (mother’s mother) brought with her when she migrated from Suriname, then still colonized by the Dutch. Their Nani has been nurturing this plant ever since, and gifted several branches to her children and grandchildren. The Snake Plant, native to tropical West Africa, is part of a colonial history. This plant has become a symbol of migration, rootedness, family and hybridization. The residency also builds on Dancing on the Edge’s ongoing artistic research around decentralized artistic encounter (converging practices) and overlapping geographies, and in which space has been growing for the presence of plants. You are invited into this project too! You are welcome to participate the Dance Labs, Henna Lab, Incense Lab taking place during this residency. We will dance, build altars, create incense with Farah Rahman, and feed our unique relations with Henna, facilitated by Anima Jhagroe-Ruissen. Je eigen kansen maken en verzilveren, in een land van ongekende mogelijkheden. Droomt niet iedereen wel eens van Amerika? Dit najaar speelt Strijkorkest Metamorphosen een programma rond deze droom. Strijkorkest Metamorphosen speelt in samenwerking met celliste Ketevan Roinishvili en onder leiding van Gijs Kramers: Lyric for Strings van George Walker Cello Concerto van Robert Schumann Symphony for Strings van William Schuman American Movements van Antonin Dvořák Schumann in Amerika Robert Schumann droomde lange tijd van een grote concertreis door de Verenigde Staten. We weten niet of het een verlangen naar dit land van ongekende mogelijkheden was, of dat Duitsland te klein en provinciaal aanvoelde, maar hij zag in ieder geval grote kansen, ook financieel, voor een serie pianoconcerten gegeven door zijn vrouw Clara. Vanwege verplichtingen en praktische bezwaren bleef het bij een vurig verlangen: van Amerikaanse stad naar stad reizen, bedolven onder bloemen. Verlangen spreekt uit het gehele oeuvre van Schumann, wat ook zeker geldt voor zijn celloconcert. Elegant en warm is het werk, een echt samenspel tussen solist en orkest. Dat het concert met alleen strijkers uitvoeren in plaats van met een volledig orkest geen gek idee is, schreef Schumann zelf al aan zijn uitgever Breitkopf & Härtel. Zijn celloconcert zou ook bij uitstek geschikt zijn om met een strijkkwartet te spelen, “ zodat men het werk ook in de privé sfeer kan spelen ”. Het werk wint aan intieme balans, opbouwend naar een duet tussen solo cello en eerste orkest cello in het laatste deel. Spillville Ioha Antonin Dvořák had, net als Schumann, dezelfde droom om naar Amerika te trekken, maar in tegenstelling tot Schumann voerde hij zijn droom wel uit. Van 1892 tot 1895 was hij de directeur van het National Conservatory of Music in New York. Een aantal van zijn meest bekende en geliefde werken schreef hij in de Verenigde Staten, maar bij vlagen was Dvořák doodongelukkig in het land van ongekende mogelijkheden. Rust en geluk vond hij in de zomervakantie van 1893 bij de Tsjechische gemeenschap van het stadje Spillville in Ioha. Hij schreef er zijn 12e strijkkwartet, nu ook wel het ‘Amerikaanse’ kwartet genoemd. De schets van het werk kostte hem drie en de uitwerking dertien dagen. Hij noteerde op de partituur: “God zij dank. Ik ben tevreden. Het ging snel.” Hoe Amerikaans het werk is, daar lopen de meningen over uiteen. Er wordt bijvoorbeeld gezegd dat Dvořák zich, met name in het tweede deel, door Indiaanse toonladders en ritmiek liet inspireren als een eerbetoon aan de oorspronkelijke bewoners van de Verenigde Staten. Metamorphosen speelt twee delen uit het werk: dit beroemde tweede en het dansende vierde deel. Symphony for Strings Net als Dvořák verwerkte de Amerikaanse en Joodse componist William Schuman ook graag volksmelodieën in zijn werken. Geboren in de Bronx, speelde hij als klein jongetje viool en banjo. Tijdens zijn middelbare schooltijd leidde hij zijn eigen dansorkest: Billy Schuman and his Alamo Society Orchestra , in te huren voor feesten en partijen. In zijn latere composities experimenteerde hij met het verwerken van moderne invloeden, jazz, dissonantie en geluiden van de straat. Voor zijn ‘oorlogs’ cantate, “A Free Song”, gecomponeerd in 1943, won hij de Pulitzer Prize. Uit datzelfde jaar stamt zijn symfonie voor strijkers. Al direct bij verschijnen werd het stuk populair. Het is een van Schuman’s meest gespeelde werken, onder andere door de promotie van zijn vriend Leonard Bernstein. De ‘oorlogs symphonie’ (ook wel symfonie nummer vijf) is met zijn 18 minuten relatief kort en bestaat uit drie delen. Na de beide canons van de eerste twee delen eindigt het werk snel en opgetogen: men verwachtte toen dat de oorlog snel zou zijn afgelopen. Ongelijke kansen Dat er een keerzijde is van het land van ongekende mogelijkheden, weten we natuurlijk. Kansen zijn er niet voor iedereen. Misschien is het land van ongekende mogelijkheden vooral ook een land van ongekende tegenstellingen. Onder andere de weerslag van het slavernijverleden echoot nog altijd door, ook in de gepolariseerde politiek van nu. George Walker arrangeerde het tweede deel van zijn eerste strijkkwartet, een jeugdwerk uit 1946, tot ‘Lyric for Strings’ voor strijkorkest. Het langzame werk is opgedragen aan de grootmoeder van Walker, Melvina King, een voormalige slavin die tijdens het schrijven van het stuk overleed. De jonge Walker begon zijn carrière als pianist, en voerde op jonge leeftijd bijvoorbeeld Rachmaninov’s derde piano concert uit met het Philadelphia Orchestra onder Eugene Ormandy. Op het conservatorium begon hij naast zijn studie piano ook met componeren, ondanks zijn vrees dat hij als zwarte componist maar weinig opdrachten zou kunnen krijgen. Een vrees die jaren terecht bleek, maar gelukkig stimuleerde Nadia Boulanger hem door te zetten. Op late leeftijd won hij uiteindelijk, net als Schuman, de Pulitzer prijs. Ik heb een zeer sterke affiniteit met de negrospiritual en heb ook geput uit Amerikaanse volksliederen, en populaire en patriottische deuntjes, die naar mijn mening een plaats verdienen in serieuze composities. zei hij in een interview uit 1982 met de New York Times. De tentoonstelling Cruquius: experiment en ontwerpplezier vertelt het verhaal van vier pioniersgebouwen op het Cruquiuseiland, ontworpen door LEVS architecten. Het Cruquiuseiland is het laatste eiland in het Oostelijk Havengebied dat getransformeerd wordt tot een stedelijke woonwijk. Het gebied ontpopte zich tijdens de economische crisis vanaf 2008 tot een stedenbouwkundige en architectonische ‘testsite’ waar - zonder vastomlijnd stedenbouwkundig plan - een nieuw stuk stad is verrezen. LEVS kreeg de kans om op onconventionele wijze na te denken over wonen, werken en samenleven in de stad. Het resultaat is een viertal opmerkelijke woongebouwen die het belang tonen van experiment en ontwerpplezier: De Bocht, De Loods, 2Peer en Harbour Club. Lasting from the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 to the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, the Mao era is often misunderstood as a time of “isolation” and “closing off from the world.” On the contrary, as I demonstrate in this study, Mao’s China was a place seething with new international connections and rapidly evolving visions of the world and China’s place in it. These connections, moreover, were not limited to the socialist world but stretched far beyond, engaging diverse artistic communities in countries across the political spectrum. In this talk, I examine China’s international dance exchanges and internationally themed choreographies inspired by these exchanges that took place in China during the 1950s and 1960s. From tours by Mexican modern dancers and British and Japanese ballet dancers in the 1950s to a Chinese dance drama about the US Civil Rights Movement inspired by visits of African American activists, these encounters challenge us to rethink current understandings of the circuits of cultural exchange during the Cold War, as well as China’s artists’ conceptions of and access to the wider world during this period. EMILY WILCOX is Margaret Hamilton Professor of Modern Languages & Literatures in Chinese Studies at William & Mary and a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow. She is the author of Revolutionary Bodies: Chinese Dance and the Socialist Legacy (University of California Press, 2018, winner of the 2019 de la Torre Bueno Prize® from the Dance Studies Association), published in Chinese in 2023 by Fudan University Press under the title 革命的身体：重新认识现当代中国舞蹈文化.
