Maria Loizidou’s new, commissioned work The Place I Am Not, is a series of site-specific works that focus on the idea of ‘place’ as a protective shell for human beings. The exhibition unfolds across two venues, as a collaboration between The Hellenic Centre and the Freud Museum, London. The artist focuses her attention on the concept of ‘place’ as a protective shell for human beings. She connects The Hellenic Centre, housed at a former Swedish gymnasium and hospital, with the Freud Museum, the house of Sigmund Freud in London, through their function as places of both protection and nurture for the mind and body. Loizidou explores the role of these places in preserving multiple identities, including those of diaspora communities, taking into consideration that Freud himself was an immigrant and the Hellenic Centre was originally founded to unite the Hellenic diaspora in the UK.
