Restore 22 Military Bike Ride | Pittsburgh
Sep 28, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Pittsburgh
THE RIDE Our bicycle rides are a great way to explore Western Pennsylvania and beyond. The rides are hosted by Leo McCarthy, Army veteran and retired Moon Township police chief. Leo works hard to plan our rides, peppering them with an ounce of fun and a dash of history. The rides are social in nature and limited to a small group of 15 riders. We take our time and enjoy the camaraderie. Most rides are between 15 and 20 miles. Join us in September on a journey that visits several highly historic Pittsburgh Civil War sites. We will visit the location of the Allegheny Arsenal where 9/17/1862 three buildings exploded killing 78 staff, mostly young women and girls. We will continue our travels to the Allegheny Cemetery and visit their mass grave. We will visit the military cemetery as well and the grave of General Alexander Hayes. We will stand where General Ulysses Grant cried while visiting the grave of his West Point best friend. And then we will visit the grave of Pittsburgh’s Steven Foster, America’s first great composer. We will also visit the Temple of Memories Mausoleum. Our ride will be primarily on city trails, but some will be on city alleys with little or no traffic. Some of the hills in the cemetery will be challenging but you are welcome to walk them. Interested riders are welcome to join us for lunch afterward, at their own expense. Meet up details will be provided the day before the ride. YOUR GUIDE Your guide for this excursion is Leo McCarthy. After serving three years in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps at Fort Hood, Leo joined the Moon Township police force as a uniformed patrol officer in 1976. He rose through the ranks serving as a detective and sergeant before being promoted to captain in 1999, and then to chief in 2005. After 41 years of service to Moon Township, he retired on January 1, 2018. Leo is highly educated in the field of law enforcement and graduated from the FBI National Academy, Class 198 in 1999. He is an avid cyclist and enjoys exploring the region's bike trails. REQUIREMENTS Open to anyone who served in the U.S. military and a guest. All riders must be 18 years of age or older.Riders of all skill levels are welcome, though they should be familiar with the basics of shifting bicycle gears. All riders are required to bring their own bike and PPE.Riders must sign a waiver prior to the ride.Allow for about two hours for the ride, not including lunch.Leo McCarthy

An Afternoon with Author Bill Gormley in Conversation with Annette Dashofy | Riverstone Books
Sep 28, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Pittsburgh
We are delighted to welcome Bill Gormley to talk about his first work of fiction, Too Many Bridges - a murder mystery set it Pittsburgh, but more on that below. Please cancel your ticket if you are no longer able to attend. Want to pre-order your copy of the book? You can do so here. About the book: An eyewitness to a murder calls the Pittsburgh police from one of the city's 446 bridges, then disappears. To solve the case, the police must find the bridge. But where to start? Detective Branko Radic and Officer Kathleen Mulroy seek help from a nun, a professor, a mechanic, and a tattoo artist. They learn of a family feud, a business in trouble, some sketchy Harry Potter merchandise, and a missing young woman. If only they can find the right bridge, they might be able to put it all together. But sometimes, a case is like a funhouse mirror at an amusement park. You have to adjust to the distortions in order to perceive the truth. About the author: Bill Gormley grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and lives in Arlington, Virginia. From 1990 to 2023, he was University Professor of Public Policy and Government at Georgetown University, where he co-directed the Center for Research on Children in the U.S. (CROCUS). He is the author of Too Many Bridges, a murder mystery published by Level Best Books in August, 2024. He is also the creator of Profs on Cops, a podcast that features interviews with criminologists and social scientists who are doing cutting-edge research on police practices and behavior. About the conversation partner: USA Today best-selling author Annette Dashofy has spent her entire life in rural Pennsylvania surrounded by cattle and horses. When she wasn’t roaming the family’s farm or playing in the barn, she could be found reading or writing. After high school, she spent five years as an EMT on the local ambulance service, dealing with everything from drunks passing out on the sidewalk to mangled bodies in car accidents. These days, she, her husband, and their spoiled cat, Kensi, live on property that was once part of her grandfather’s dairy.
