Amina Figarova Sextet with Matsiko World Orphan Choir | St Paul United Methodist Church
Nov 16, 2024 (UTC-6)ENDED
Street
Critically acclaimed jazz composer and pianist, Amina Figarova, in collaboration with the internationally renowned Matsiko World Orphan Choir, has created an exceptional evening of music that has thrilled audiences across the United States in over 40 performances from New Orleans to Buffalo and Nashville to Chicago. The two groups came together in March of 2024 to create a recording entitled Suite for Africa, and have been on tour in the US from April through November.
Meadowlark is thrilled to be able to present this special concert as one of the last stops on their 2024 tour before the choir returns to Libera, Africa.
The 18 albums Amina Figarova released to date have made her one of the most admired composers in jazz. … The (Matsiko World Orphan Choir) voices are neither sweet nor soothing, they are clamorous and jubilant …. It sounds like love becomes music.
Thomas Conrad, Stereophile Magazine, September, 2024 Founded in 2005 by Don and Jennie Windham, the Matsiko World Orphan Choir became an international phenomenon. The Matsiko World Orphan Choir is made up of sponsored children from Liberia, Peru, India, and Nepal. Matsiko is the first choir to allow children in the sponsorship program to come to the US and tour as ambassadors for the world's 600 million orphaned and at-risk children. This event is free, but tickets are required.

This evening will feature readings by the following featured poets: Arienette Zak & Laura Potts: Arienette Zak is a poet and multidisciplinary artist currently serving as the fourth Poet Laureate for the City of St. Albert. Her work explores themes of growth and change, tackling subjects like illness and what we owe to one another. In addition to formal roles, she also serves as the coach for STARK Poets and moonlights in photography in her spare time. Laura Potts is an electronic musician and artist from Edmonton, Alberta. She has had a passion for music and digital art ever since she first logged on. Her inspirations include computing, sketchy websites, creepypasta, and industrial settings. She has been actively making music for nine years and received two awards for sound design in high school. Dwennimmen: Shima Aisha Robinson is an amiskwaciy-wâskahikan born student, community builder, poet and spoken word artist who embodies, with every literary and scholarly effort, the ancient meaning of her chosen pen name. Dwennimmen is the name of an ancient African Adinkra symbol, which means strength, humility, learning and wisdom. She is the author of two books including HORN, 2016 (Denseverse), and Bellow, 2022 (Glass House Press). Shima is also the 10th Edmonton Poet Laureate. Joy Love: Joy Love is a spoken word artist and poet featured by the Edmonton Poetry Festival, Found Fest, and more. They currently live and study in Amiskwacîwâskahikan, colonially known as Edmonton, on Treaty 6 territory. When not writing, they are likely busy studying, thinking about how weird it is to be a person, or loving their chosen family & friends like it’s their day job. See (and hear) more of their work on Instagram @ joyishumansunshine ᐋᑕᔫᐦᑳᑌᐤ Ryan James Summers: ‘Some-Sum’ (also known as Old Bear Angel Person) is an Indigenous songwriter/storyteller, spoken word poet, freestyle performance artist & emcee from Amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.). ‘Sum’ started writing at the age of 16 & began to freestyle whilst living on the streets of Edmonton at age 17. His submersion into hip-hop culture supported the foundation of his ability to freestyle & eventually songwrite & experiment with lyricism. This enthusiastic devotion to 'wordsmithing' as an art form has successfully cultivated an adept ability to express with purpose, passion & power for intentionally conscious, culture-informed entertainment. His work covers anti-colonialism, Indigenous spirituality, and the relationship between self & the world around us. Jonah Angeles: Jonah Angeles is a Filipino-Canadian multidisciplinary artist based in Edmonton, AB (Treaty 6), specializing in writing, visual arts, design, and music. In 2019, he graduated from the University of Alberta with a BSc in Psychology and Creative Writing. He has loved writing since he could put pen to paper and credits his mom for reading to him at bedtime, instilling a passion for literature and poetry since day one. Jonah’s literary and poetic work blends futurism with nostalgia, science-fiction and surrealism, beauty and terror—all to address the question of, “What does it all mean, really?” *Note on Acessibility: If finances are a barrier for you and you'd like to attend this event, you can use the promo code 'MULTITUDES' for 50% off tickets. The Jewelry Designs of Millicent Rogers | Mahnaz Collection
Nov 20, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Street
During his discussion with Julie Simpson, Adam Hayes will be presenting Millicent Rogers as an independent jewelry designer and sculptor in her own right. In doing so, he will be indicating Rogers’ sources of inspiration, her preferred materials and methods of creation, and contextualize her work in relation to that of her contemporaries. In addition to discussing her independent work as a jeweler, Simpson and Hayes will also touch upon Rogers’ role in the design and development process of some of the most defining jewelers of the period such as the House of Boivin, Jean Schlumberger, and others. Throughout their discussion, Simpson and Hayes will cumulatively trace Millicent Rogers’ development from collaborative client to independent jeweler. Adam Hayes is a Dress & Material Culture Historian who holds an MA in Visual Culture from New York University and a BFA in Fine Arts & Museum Studies from the University of Cincinnati. Throughout the past decade, Hayes has achieved various professional positions working with fashion, jewelry, & archival documents in competitive, highly-active environments including The Costume Institute at The MET. Hayes’ work in art galleries and with contemporary fashion brands has allowed him to broaden and implement his analytic, creative, and writing skills into a commercial environment. He has contributed to sourcing visual & material culture references which inform concept/design development and writing commercial copy. Hayes has a vast knowledge of and experience working with fashion, jewelry, and related material culture from the twentieth century, with a particular specialty from 1925-1975. His independent scholarship predominantly centers around the cultivation of identity through material. Julie Simpson has loved jewelry since birth. With the help of Mahnaz Ispahani and other mentors she has built a collection of jewelry from the 60's and 70's by artists and artistic jewelers such as, Arnaldo Pomodoro and Andrew Grima, respectively. Though she has never worked full-time in the industry, she is a certified goldsmith and has designed or commissioned dozens of jewels. It is this love of designing from which she relates to Millicent Rogers' story and wanted to hear more about her from historian, Adam Hayes. During her career as a brand consultant she has conducted 100's of interviews/focus groups on tech, wine, wellness and fashion. She is eager to finally conduct an interview on jewelry and to do so in an environment that feels like a home, Mahnaz Collection. Each November, NYC Jewelry Week proudly presents ‘The Week,’ a 7-day celebration dedicated to the art of jewelry. This annual event invites a global audience to explore the world of jewelry through a dynamic mix of in-person and virtual experiences, spanning New York City and beyond.
