Firelei Báez | Vancouver Art Gallery
Nov 3, 2024–Mar 16, 2025 (UTC-8)
Vancouver
Organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, this exhibition is the first mid-career survey of the richly layered work of Firelei Báez. One of the most exciting painters of her generation, Báez delves into the historical narratives of the Atlantic Basin. Over the past twenty years, she has made work that explores the multilayered explorations of the legacy of colonial histories and the African diaspora in the Caribbean and beyond. She draws on the disciplines of anthropology, geography, folklore, fantasy, science fiction and social history to unsettle categories of race, gender and nationality in her paintings, drawings and installations. Her exuberant paintings feature finely wrought, complex and layered uses of pattern, decoration and saturated colour, often overlaid on maps made during colonial rule in the Americas. Báez’s investment in the medium of painting and its capacity for storytelling and mythmaking informs all her work, including her sculptural installations, which bring this quality into three dimensions. This exhibition offers audiences a timely opportunity to gain a holistic understanding of Báez’s complex and profoundly moving body of work, cementing her as one of the most important artists of the early 21st century. Please note that the banner installation Truth was the bridge (or an emancipatory healing) (2024) on the Gallery’s Georgia facade will be removed between November 6 and 13, 2024, for Lumière Festival.

Blending folk, blues, country, orchestral pop, and various psychedelic stylings, their sound culminates in what Jon Pareles from the New York Times once described as, “spellbound music, rapt in fatalism and sorrow.” Known for her dusky, otherworldly vocals and lyrics that touch on the metaphysical, All Music added; whether the sonic setting is one of doomy distortion or fragile finger picking, Sykes remains a truly unique vocalist whose dusky voice is capable of imparting a transcendent, almost spiritual quality to almost any tune it touches. This special show with old friends Black Mountain, reunites the two bands, who have toured together in the US and shared stages in both Canada and Europe. In recent times Sykes and Wandscher often appear as a duo, or are joined onstage with bassist Bill Herzog, an original Sweet Hereafter member (and decade long member of seminal Northwest legends, Earth.)
The trio recently returned from Europe where they had the honor of supporting avant-garde doom purveyors Sunn O))), who Sykes, Herzog and Wandscher are also known for collaborating and performing with. They are presently preparing the release of their 5th record, after a very long recording hiatus, and are thrilled to be back in Canada for this special night of music. jessesykes.com DaggerIt’s blue jeans, it’s leather jackets, it’s pointy boots, it’s the New Wave Of British Columbian Heavy Metal… it’s DAGGER. www.instagram.com/dagger_666_ RSVP on FacebookRefund PolicyNo refunds, unless event is cancelled. Emma Willmann Comedy Show Live in Vancouver | Granville Island Stage, Arts Club Theatre Company
Feb 23, 2025 (UTC-8)
Vancouver
Emma Willmann is one of New York City’s top comedians, and perhaps one of the only dyslexic-gender-wiggly-comics-with-ADHD from Blue Hill, Maine. In the third grade, Mrs. Weller would bribe Emma with the chance to tell a story at the end of every class if Emma promised to stop talking to the other classmates. Now, Emma gets to tell stories nightly at The Comedy Cellar, on Netflix’s: The Comedy Line Up, Comedy Central, and is one of the few comics ever to have multiple appearances on The Late Show with Stephan Colbert. All of which has earned Emma a spot on Caroline’s 10 Funniest Comics, Just For Laughs: New Faces, and TimeOut’s 10 Funniest Women in NYC. Emma’s mom is “really proud of all of this but doesn’t like comedy.” Additionally, Emma is an actor and writer best known for playing the role of Beth on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and also featured on Paramount Plus’s The Good Fight, Judd Apatow’s Crashing, MTV, and TruTV. Emma also has a chart-topping podcast, Inside The Closet and is a regular on The Taylor Strecker Show. Emma tells stories everyday on Instagram and TikTok, several of which have gone viral and earned a total of 450,000 followers (although we’re pretty sure Mrs. Weller isn’t one of them). From peanut butter to porn preferences, Emma loves talking about everything and is known for the unique ability to authentically connect with all types of audiences, even the occasional heckler. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT NOTICE—PLEASE READ: All tickets are registered with a name and email in our system. Doors: 7:00pmTy SegallTy Segall follows 2022’s acoustic introspection opus “Hello, Hi” with a deeper, wilder journey to the center of the self. With Three Bells, he’s created a set of his most ambitious, elastic songs, using his musical vocabulary with ever-increasing sophistication. It’s an obsessive quest for an expression that answers back to the riptide always pulling him subconsciously into the depths. Questions we all ask in our own private mirrors are faced down here—and regardless of what the mysterious “Three Bells” mean in the context of the album’s libretto, you can be assured that Ty’s ringing them for himself, and for the rest of us in turn. ty-segall.com King TuffKing Tuff's Kyle Thomas is an in-demand guitarist and producer who worked with artists like J Mascis, Hand Habits, and Hunx while crafting a series of albums that show off his encyclopedic knowledge of glitzy, glammy rock & roll. Initial records like 2008's Was Dead grabbed sounds and hooks from power pop, the British Invasion, frizzy psychedelia, and punk while sounding like they were cooked under the heat of a mini-mart heat lamp. By the time of 2018's The Other, Thomas had tired of his party animal persona and sought to explore his inner self while scaling back the noise, a process he continued with the help of Sasami Ashworth on 2023's Smalltown Stardust, an almost guitar-less, poignantly nostalgic indie pop record. kingtuffworld.net RSVP on FacebookRefund PolicyNo refunds, unless event is cancelled.
