Greenwell currently lives in New York, where he is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at NYU. Greenwell’s great gift: finding forms for the representation of thought, much as the Impressionist painters, more than a century ago, found new forms for the representation of light.” —Sarah Thankam Mathews,New York A medical crisis brings one man close to death—and to love, art, and beauty—in a profound and luminous novel by award-winning author Garth Greenwell. A poet's life is turned inside out by a sudden, wrenching pain. The pain brings him to his knees, and eventually to the ICU. Confined to bed, plunged into the dysfunctional American healthcare system, he struggles to understand what is happening to his body, as someone who has lived for many years in his mind. This is a searching, sweeping novel set at the furthest edges of human experience, where the forces that give life value—art, memory, poetry, music, care—are thrown into sharp relief. Time expands and contracts. Sudden intimacies bloom. Small Rain surges beyond the hospital to encompass a radiant vision of human life: our shared vulnerability, the limits and possibilities of sympathy, the ideal of art and the fragile dream of America. Above all, this is a love story of the most unexpected kind. Ira Sachs is a NYC-based filmmaker, whose feature films include Passages, Little Men, Love is Strange, Keep the Lights On and Forty Shades of Blue, winner of the 2005 Sundance Dramatic Grand Jury Prize. In 2009, he founded Queer|Art, a non-profit arts organization that provides support for LGBTQ+ artists in film, visual arts, performance and literature. Join us for an in-person event with best-selling Chuck Palahniuk for the release of his new book Shock Induction. This event will be hosted in the Strand Book Store's 3rd floor Rare Book Room at 828 Broadway on 12th Street. All tickets will include a copy of the book. Can’t make the event? Purchase a signed copy of Shock Induction here. ACCESSIBILITY: Strand Book Store is an ADA compliant venue. The event space is accessible via elevator. Please reach out to our events team at events@strandbooks.com by October 3rd to request. For further information on accessibility in this space, or to make a request, please contact events@strandbooks.com. -------------------------------------------------------------------- From the bestselling author of Fight Club comes a dark, satirical parable about a string of mysterious high school disappearances, the seedy underbellies of billionaires, and the tough choices we make in the face of an uncertain future. In Shock Induction, the best and brightest students at a seemingly reputable high school are disappearing. Every day it seems another overachiever is lost to an apparent suicide. But something far more sinister is lurking beneath the surface. These kids have been under surveillance since birth, monitored and measured by an online service called “Greener Pastures.” It’s here, in Greener Pastures, that billionaires observe and recruit the next generation of talent. The highest test scores, the best grades, and the most niche extracurriculars just might land these teenagers an enticing offer at auction. A couple billion dollars in exchange for the remainder of your life and intellectual labor sounds like a pretty fair deal—doesn’t it? In a high school only Chuck Palahniuk could imagine, students must choose between the risk of following their dreams or the security of money and a lifetime of servitude to the world’s wealthiest and most elite—but how much of a choice do they truly have? Photo credit: Adam Levy Chuck Palahniuk’s fourteen novels include the bestselling Snuff; Rant; Haunted; Lullaby; Fight Club, which was made into a film by director David Fincher; Diary; Survivor; Invisible Monsters; and Choke, which was made into a film by director Clark Gregg. He is also the author of the nonfiction profile of Portland, Fugitives and Refugees, and the nonfiction collection Stranger Than Fiction. His story collection Make Something Up was a widely banned bestseller. His graphic novel Fight Club II hit #1 on the New York Times list. He’s also the author of Fight Club III and the coloring books Bait and Legacy, as well as the writing guide Consider This. He lives in the Pacific Northwest. Photographer Eric Meola launches Bending Light, an intimate account of his five-decade journey with light and color in 100 iconic photographs taken throughout his career. He will be in conversation with David Schonauer, editor-in-chief of Pro Photo Daily. PLEASE NOTE: RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Seating is limited and will be first come, first served. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Can't attend?Order your signed copy(please specify that you would like it signed in the comments box at checkout). Bending Light: The Moods of Color showcases photographer Eric Meola's use of light and color throughout his career of editorial, advertising, and personal work. In one hundred iconic photographs, including recent experiments with color abstracts, and in dozens of stories and anecdotes, he examines his five-decade journey using color in photography, its symbolism, and how it affects our moods. Meola's work is informed by writers, painters, musicians, and the desire to create visual metaphors with his imagery -- whether intimate portraits, unique landscapes, or color-saturated abstracts, his use of geometry within the frame of the photograph creates a tension that is instantly recognizable. In awarding him its Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023, the Professional Photographers of America noted that Eric Meola champions photography as a visual language capable of great emotion. He's a photographer with a love affair for color, light, and artistic freedom. As Meola says, Light and color are my subject as much as the subject itself. It's the confluence of color with light -- the movement within the color -- that's important to me. Although the end image is a still photograph, the story of its creation, the how and why it came to be, is part of every photographer's psyche. Telling the stories behind the photographs is my way to revisit the creative process, both as a means of introspection as well as expression. Photography has always been a way for me to create what I feel, and feel as I create. Bending Light: The Moods of Color takes us on a visual journey around the world as Meola tells the story behind the creation of each image, giving insight into the thought process behind creating photographs. A photographer from Rangefinder magazine referred to him as one of a handful of color photographers who are true innovators. Photo credit: © Joanna McCarthy Eric Meola studied photography at the Newhouse School of Journalism at Syracuse University and graduated with a B.A. in English Literature. Meola’s photographs are included in the archive of the American Society of Media Photographers, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., the International Center of Photography in New York, and the George Eastman Museum. His previous books include Last Places on Earth (GRAPHIS, 2004), Born to Run: The Unseen Photos (Insight Editions, 2006), INDIA: In Word & Image (Welcome Books, 2008), and FIERCE BEAUTY: Storms of the Great Plains (IMAGES Publishing, 2019). He has received numerous awards, including “Advertising Photographer of the Year” in 1986 from the American Society of Media Photographers, a “Power of the Image” George Eastman award in 2014, and, in 2023, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Photographers of America. David Schonauer is the editor-in-chief of Pro Photo Daily, a blog and newsletter focused on photography and visual culture. He was formerly the editor-in-chief of American Photo magazine. He has also written for Vanity Fair, The New York Times, The Atlantic, Smithsonian, and other publications. Information Source: Rizzoli Bookstore | eventbrite

The Printmaker, The Artist & The Curator: A CollaborationPrintmaker and Publisher, Barret Oliver of The ƒ/Ø Project and Photographer William Camargo will join Linde Lehtinen, the Philip D. Nathanson Senior Curator of Photography for The Huntington, in a public conversation to discuss their work together and the art and science of collaboration. This free PAC LA event will be open to the public and held at the new Nazraeli Press space at The Reef (see address details above). Printmaker and Publisher Barret Oliver created The ƒ/Ø Project , a studio established to rethink the nature of the photographic object, by starting again from the beginning. The aim is to marry the technologies of photographic history with artists from the contemporary world, giving them the opportunity to expand their vocabulary by working in a wider variety of photographic printmaking techniques. William Camargo is one such artist from the contemporary world. He uses photography, installation, public interventions, and archives to address issues of gentrification, and Chicanx/Latinx histories. He and Oliver worked together on a beautiful series of albumen prints which were recently acquired by The Huntington's photography collection under the direction of curator Linde Lehtinen. Oliver writes, William Camargo's work tackles real historical incidents of political injustice while at the same time providing a privileged glimpse into the personal domestic spaces rarely captured by mainstream representations of activism. As the Philip D. Nathanson Senior Curator of Photography at The Huntington, Dr. Linde Lehtinen is responsible for the Library’s vast photography collection of over 800,000 images. Her work with Oliver and Camargo brings these stunning photographs to the wider museum-going audience, and preserves them for future generations. Working together, they have uncovered a plethora of documentation and unstaged material that will be featured in a forthcoming exhibition dedicated to Foreman and his collaborators in the Ontological-Hysteric Theater. They will discuss their process and consider the question of what it means to transmit experience. Foreman's iconoclastic productions are largely irreproducible, and yet they must always be performed anew in order to be seen. What is involved in authentically staging the work of a theater artist who insists that others must not interpret or imitate him when performing his plays? Reception to follow. Co-moderated by Rye Gentleman and Helen Shaw. Co-sponsored by the Department of Performance Studies and the Division of Libraries. Presented as part of NYU's Archives Onstage series, Richard Foreman Wants You to Wake Up. Information Source: NYU’s Performance Studies Department | eventbrite

Rizzoli celebrates Dustin Pittman: New York After Dark, an intimate, after-hours chronicle from the heart of the 1970s and '80s scene, drawn from Pittman's vast, largely unseen archive. Dustin Pittman will be in conversation with authors Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha, followed by a signing. PLEASE NOTE: RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Seating is limited and will be first come, first served. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Can't attend?Order your signed copy(please specify that you would like it signed in the comments box at checkout). Dustin Pittman amassed an archive of 100,000 photographs chronicling the untamed corners of New York City's after-hours nightlife, from shadowy underground haunts to prestigious galleries and clubs. This wish I was there book unveils the vibrant pop culture scene of New York during the 1970s and '80s. Pittman was not just an observer but was an active participant in the places and events that shaped pop culture as we know it--the goings- on at Andy Warhol's Factory, the women's liberation movements of the 1970s, the VIP room at Studio 54, and the nascent punk scene at CBGB and The Mudd Club. Through Pittman's lens, readers are provided an intimate glimpse into the intersecting worlds of fashion and celebrity, music, art, and politics--from the glam rock underground and the golden age of disco to the ateliers of the world's most famous fashion designers such as Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, and Calvin Klein. Pittman was witness to such rising stars as Blondie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The New York Dolls, and Roxy Music, as well as seminal cultural figures including Raquel Welch, Truman Capote, Diana Ross, Tina Chow, Brooke Shields, Jerry Hall, Divine, and Liza Minnelli--all caught in spontaneous, unguarded New York moments. A vast majority are previously unpublished images of some of the most iconic and revered figures of the late 20th century, accompanied by firsthand observations and remembrances by Pittman. The book features an introductory essay offering an objective view of Pittman's work and importance as a chronicle of the music, art, and fashion scenes. Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha are the founders of MAO Public Relations and the authors of several Rizzoli books. Dustin Pittman has forged a career of stalking the weird, the bold and the sublime in dimly lighted basements, galleries and stray pockets of Manhattan’s after-hours life. A veteran of publications including Women’s Wear Daily and W, and various Condé Nast magazines, he has been photographing the intersecting worlds of fashion, music and art since the middle and late 1960s. His Instagram feed, @dustinpop contains nothing less than a capsule history of New York fashion and night life. Among its cast of characters are Velvet Underground stars and Warhol divas; fashion legends including Betsey Johnson, Stephen Sprouse, Tina Chow and Marc Jacobs — the latter long before he was a marquee name; concert idols in the making, including David Bowie, Bryan Ferry and Iggy Pop; and louche habitués of the fabled nighttime haunts Area and the Mudd Club. "Meet the Artist" with Maedeh Ojaghloo | The Center for Photography at Woodstock

On Thursday, October 3, we welcome Maedeh Ojaghloo to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Ojaghloo will present her most recent project Beyond Shattered Honor. The project explores the issue of honor killings in Iran, shedding light on the complex web of gender-based violence, early marriages and deeply ingrained societal standards. These brutal killings stem from the belief that an individual's actions can bring shame to their family. This leads to women's deaths accused of dishonoring their families. Reasons behind these acts range from rejecting marriage proposals and being in frowned upon relationships to seeking divorce and facing allegations of misconduct. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s YouTube page at 6pm. Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation. Maedeh Ojaghloo, an Iranian artist and social activist, was born in 1993 and raised in Iran. She earned her MA degree in Animation in Iran and moved to the United States in 2022 to pursue an MFA degree in Photography and Related Media at SUNY New Paltz. As a multidisciplinary artist, she believes that being an artist means being an activist. Her work reflects the environment she comes from while adapting it to her new surroundings by integrating archives from her past. She brings attention to the challenges faced by individuals in Iran, a nation marred by state-endorsed brutality and suppression of women. Through her art, she engages audiences in her community's experiences, amplifying silenced voices. Information Source: The Center for Photography at Woodstock | eventbrite
