Looking for Kindness Amidst Anxiety with Old Reverend Randell | 541 Eatery & Exchange

Nov 2, 2024 (UTC-5)
Hamilton
Music
Concerts
Looking for Kindness Amidst Anxiety is a one man show by Old Reverend Randell (aka Randell Neudorf), in the storytelling tradition of the Vinyl Cafe with Stuart McLean. Here is what Randell has to say about the show: It all started with some cartoons I made in my art journal while struggling with a year of prolonged anxiety attacks. Through therapy, the idea of kindness became very important to me. I began to share my stories along side my Kindness Cartoons and it really resonated with people and helped me feel seen. It started to feel like these drawings wanted to live somewhere outside my art journal, so I turned them into a little book called Looking for Kindness Amidst Anxiety. Around the same time I was also working on my debut album 4-track Gospel under the stage name Old Reverend Randell. These songs were all about how things like anxiety and pain left me feeling like I didn't fit in, especially at church. The album ends with the title track, an epic story that uses the image of a 4-track tape recorder (how musicians did home recording before computers) as a metaphor. I imagined the gospel writers: Mathew, Mark, Luke & John used up all the tape and there was no place left for me. The song then flips to what can only be described as a mystical experience. In the transition I sing, “It’s kind of strange to say, it’s event stranger to sing. I don’t need you to believe it, or even receive it, I just need to tell it, the way that I felt it!” I began to realize that these two projects were really one story. And as I have had the chance to share pieces of this at art shows, youth centers and concerts, people always tell me, You were really speaking my language! I think most people can identify with the struggles of mental health and we are all looking to find a little more kindness in our lives. That is the story I'll be sharing on Saturday, November 2nd at the 541 Eatery & Exchange. 541is one of my favourite neighbourhood coffee shops. I chose this venue, because they understand kindness. They have a pay-it-forward model where people can pay a little extra so someone else (who couldn't afford it) can get a coffee in that same shop. I actually have a whole page in my book that talks about this beautiful exchange. IMPORTANT INFO: Doors Open at 7pm: Please do support 541 by buying a drink or snack. Performance Begins at 7:30pm: Don't be late, I would hate for you to miss anthing. Books & Art Prints will be for sale by Cash or E-transfer. Tickets must be purchased through Eventbrite. We will not be selling tickets at the door. Parking: There is lots of street parking available. There is no parking lot. Lovebot Creator Unveils New Fantasy Exhibit in Toronto Toronto, Ontario, October 8, 2024 – Multi-disciplinary artist Matthew Del Degan is set to debut his latest exploration into the world of fantasy with Borough of Ghosts, opening Friday, November 8th, 2024, at Worth Gallery. The exhibit, a haunting yet whimsical collection of paintings, illustrations, and sculptures, offers a first glimpse into two chapters from Del Degan’s forthcoming fantasy novel. I'm excited to share a new chapter of my creative journey with Borough of Ghosts. This exhibit is deeply personal, drawing from my own experiences of pain, redemption, and transformation,” says Matthew, “It's a story of love, courage and the inner battles we all face. I can't wait for people to meet Claire, experience her world, and witness the evolution of my work.” Determined to carve his own career path of becoming an entrepreneur, artist and author, Del Degan’s 2013 Toronto Love Invasion saw the introduction of concrete Lovebot sculptures and spawned a massive movement of strangers bearing their hearts around the world. While the success of this urban art project continues to be shared globally, Matthew is ready to reveal the next phase of his creative work, Borough of Ghosts. Borough of Ghosts serves as an introduction to a larger story, featuring the heroine Claire, an underwater princess on a quest to rescue her father and find inner peace. Drawing from personal experiences of pain, suffering, and liberation, the exhibit includes several large-scale, intricate paintings. The centerpiece of the show is a striking triptych depicting a twisted parade of monsters, anchoring the emotional core of the exhibition. Additionally, Del Degan will unveil an assortment of 30+ new Lovebot sculptures alongside this series. While many of these pieces are inspired by and complementary to the nautical themes of the exhibit, the one-of-a-kind “1st Of The Month” Lovebot collection also continues with several playful pieces on display. The exhibition will open on the evening of Friday, November 8, 2024, at Worth Gallery (830 Dundas St W, Toronto, ON) with an artist reception to mark the debut. The show will run for three weeks, featuring three special artist talks and Q&A sessions throughout its duration. About Matthew Del Degan Matthew Del Degan is a visionary Toronto-born artist, product designer, and entrepreneur, best known for creating the iconic Lovebot and launching the global movement The Love Invasion. A graduate of OCAD University’s Industrial Design program, Del Degan has built a diverse portfolio blending contemporary art, large-scale installations, and product design, reshaping how art interacts with public spaces. His work has been featured in MTV, Huffington Post, the Toronto Star, and more. With his latest exhibit, Borough of Ghosts, he continues to push creative boundaries, exploring new realms of fantasy storytelling through paintings, sculptures, and illustrations.
