Thomas Bancroft- Beyond the Wonder: An Ecologist's View of Wild Alaska | Village Books and Paper Dreams
Nov 23, 2024 (UTC-8)
Bellingham
Join us in the Readings Gallery to welcome longtime birder and naturalist Thomas Bancroft for a discussion on his book, Beyond the Wonder: An Ecologist's View of Alaska. The grizzly paused in knee-deep water, staring straight at the man behind the camera. Abruptly he bolted, racing full tilt toward Thomas Bancroft, his eyes glued to the photographer’s face. The bear kept coming, closer and closer, as Bancroft snapped pictures and frantically debated what to do. Suddenly a sockeye darted out of the water, and just as quickly, the powerful animal veered away to chase the fish. A biologist and scientific policy advisor, Bancroft planned his weeklong trip to the Katmai National Park and Preserve intending to photograph bears, but he ended up finding a great deal more. Having spent much of his professional career in Washington, DC, working to protect places like the Alaska wilderness and now struggling with a deep personal loss, when he finally walked among its salmon, bears, and caribou, emotions overwhelmed him. Wild things are essential to human wellbeing. Whether standing in a crystal-clear river feeling dozens of sockeye salmon swim around his legs, watching gulls lurk around a feeding bear, meeting a thrush by a Lake Clark cabin, pondering conservationist Dick Proenneke’s determination, flying over spectacular volcanoes, mountains, and glaciers, or sitting beside a pilot who has lived his entire life in wild Alaska, Bancroft felt a profound awe and respect for Alaska’s wild creatures and landscape. He also found himself contemplating his own life choices, family relationships, and career. More than just a biological perspective on Alaska’s wonders, a discussion of potential environmental impacts from human actions, a personal travel account, or a collection of dynamic photographs, Beyond the Wonder is a beautiful meditation on nature—one that highlights the importance of untamed places and the role they play in crafting a better world. Thomas Bancroft has been a lifelong birder and naturalist. Washington State University Press recently published his book Beyond the Wonder: An Ecologist’s View of Wild Alaska. The Press called his book “a beautiful meditation on nature—one that highlights the importance of untamed places and the role they play in crafting a better world.” He holds a Ph.D. in Biology and an M.A. in Zoology from the University of South Florida. His research focused on birds and their conservation. Thomas served in leadership roles for several conservation organizations, where he championed the use of scientific information in U.S. public lands policy and stewardship decisions and was often interviewed for TV, radio, and print media. He is a frequent speaker and writes regularly for the Mountaineers, Washington Ornithological Society, and Audubon chapters. His photographs have appeared in numerous books and publications, including Audubon, Birding, American Birds, and Mountaineer Magazine, as well as at the Smithsonian Natural History and the Burke Museums. Bancroft received the Mountaineers 2020 Service Award for his volunteer work.

Nov 24, 2024 (UTC-8)
Bellingham
LUKE SEVEREID Returns to Bellingham, Washington for ONE Night ONLY November 24thth / 7:00 PM LUKE SEVEREID is a hill-hiking, metal-music-loving, chrome-dome-having stand-up comedian from Seattle, WA. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest with the plaids and IPA-fueled husk to prove it, he has spent the last decade yelling jokes all over the US and Canada, and recently relocated to the East Coast, landing in the sufficiently hilly & silly Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. LUKE’s comedic style has been described as insightfully idiotic, aggressively absurd, and most accurately, unmedicated ADHD in action. Besides looking identical to your favorite bouncer/bass player, Luke was also recently in the Big Sky Comedy Festival, a semifinalist in the Seattle and San Francisco International Comedy Competition, and a winner of Best Comedy Film at HUMP! Film Festival. Millions have enjoyed his stand-up videos online, and no matter who you are or where you’re from, he is GUARANTEED to get a giggle or two out of you. FAQ Q: What is this event? A: You know that thing you like to do called laughing? That's whats going to happen here. Professional Dopamine DEALERS will bring you joy and mirth and all kinds of other synonyms. I've been performing for 12 years and regularly have people come to see me again ON PURPOSE. Check out a video and decide for yourself: https://youtu.be/Gn5pEc37DUs Q: Is this a Family Friendly Show? A: Depends how cool your family is. If you're sensitive to adult topics or language, this probably is not the show for you. If you're the type of person who leaves yelp reviews, maybe stay home and think about what you’re ultimately trying to get out of life. Again, google costs none money to use. Q: Is there a break? A: The show is continuous and runs about 90 minutes give or take. Q: What is the age limit? A: Venue is all ages. Just don't bring children that are afraid of learning. Q: Will drinks be available? We'll shout you out at the show opening and if you pay enough, I'll stop the show every 5 minutes and tell everyone how amazing your product is. Q: Explain the ticket types? A: If there are early bird tickets, those are cheap, first come, first serve tickets for people on a budget or people without commitment issues. Some venues don't let me do it. Regular Bird(General Admission) is just a ticket to the show. but that doesn't mean it's not special. Can you put a price on a night of laughter and joy and probably sex(jokes)? VIP ticket will reserve you a ticket close to the front and I'll give you a free beer koozie at the show ($700 value!). This is basically a way of throwing me some extra cash because you feel like it. Plus you don't have to go scouring the internet to find it. Sarah Hawley in conversation with Jo Segura - Servant of Earth | Village Books and Paper Dreams
Nov 12, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Bellingham
Join us in celebrating the wonderful Sarah Hawley for the release of her new novel, Servant of Earth! In the underground Fae realm, only the strongest and most ruthless have power—but a young human woman forced into a life of servitude is about to change everything. Kenna Heron is best known in her village for being a little wild—some say half feral—but she'll need every ounce of that ferocity to survive captivity in the cruel Fae court.
Trapped as a servant in the faeries' underground kingdom of Mistei, Kenna must help her new mistress undertake six deadly trials, one for each branch of magic: Fire, Earth, Light, Void, Illusion, and Blood. If she succeeds, her mistress will gain immortality and become the heir to Earth House. If she doesn't, the punishment is death—for both mistress and servant.
With no ally but a sentient dagger of mysterious origins, Kenna must face monsters, magic, and grueling physical tests. But worse dangers wait underground, and soon Kenna gets caught up in a secret rebellion against the inventively sadistic faerie king. When her feelings for the rebellion's leader turn passionate, Kenna must decide if she's willing to risk her life for a better world and a chance at happiness.
Surviving the trials and overthrowing a tyrant king will take cunning, courage, and an iron will... but even that may not be enough. Sarah Hawley is the author of A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon, A Demon's Guide to Wooing a Witch, and A Werewolf's Guide to Seducing a Vampire. She has a master's degree in archaeology and has excavated at an Inca site in Chile, a Bronze Age palace in Turkey, and a medieval abbey in England. When not dreaming up whimsical love stories, she can be found reading, dancing, or cuddling her two cats. USA Today bestselling author Jo Segura lives in the Pacific Northwest with her doggo, who vies for her attention with his sweet puppy dog eyes whenever she’s trying to write. Her stories feature strong, passionate heroines and draw upon aspects of her life, such as her Mexican heritage and her fascination with archaeology. When she’s not writing you can find her practicing law, shaking up a mean cocktail, or sitting out on the patio doing Buzzfeed quizzes (though she doesn’t care what the chicken nugget quiz said–her favorite fruit is not banana). Can't make the event? No worries - pre-order a signed copy of Servant of Earth here!
