While there may not be enough time to complete a personal project during the workshop, attendees will receive a helpful Giant Puppet Making & Parade Art Manual to take home. They will also gain valuable hands-on experience and have dedicated time to work on their own designs.
To make the most of this workshop, all participants need to bring are comfortable clothes that can get messy and a writing tool. Additionally, it is recommended to bring water and snacks for extra convenience. Join Brenden Bohannon, a renowned full-time blacksmith and bladesmith from Johnson City, Tennessee, for a unique opportunity to learn the art of blacksmithing and forge your very own small knife. This beginner bladesmithing class is a required pre-requisite for advanced classes to come.
Throughout the class, you will delve into the fascinating history of blacksmithing, gain insights into tooling techniques, and grasp other essential concepts. Under Brenden's expert guidance, you will learn the process of forging a small, all-steel knife with a simple yet elegant design. Once the forging is complete, you will have the chance to heat treat your knife and skillfully grind it to a sharp edge.
At the end of the class, you will be able to take your finished knife home, where you can complete the final tempering process in a home oven. This class is suitable for individuals aged 16 and above. For participants under 18, please ensure that a guardian accompanies them.
To make the most of your experience, we recommend wearing cotton or non-synthetic clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, along with full-length pants and close-toed shoes.

Join the Intermediate Bladesmithing: Railroad Spike to Knife workshop in Kingsport, Tennessee, at The Inventor Center on January 28, 2024. This class provides an opportunity to forge your own knife from a railroad spike while learning about blacksmithing. Prior experience in beginner blacksmithing or bladesmithing is required. Led by Brenden Bohannon, a full-time blacksmith and bladesmith, this class will cover the art of forging a railroad spike into a knife, along with essential blacksmithing history, tooling information, and basic concepts. You will also gain knowledge about spike steel properties, shaping through hammering, edge geometry, and basic heat treating. After the forging process, the knives will be heat treated and sharpened on the grinder. Please note that this is a physically intensive class, so prepare to swing a hammer. Participants must be 16 years or older, and those under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian. Dress appropriately in cotton or non-synthetic clothes that can get dirty, wear full-length pants, and close-toed shoes. Don't forget to bring water.
