From award-winning novelist and journalist Omar El Akkad comes a powerful reckoning with what it means to live in the heart of an Empire which doesn’t consider you fully human.
On Oct 25th, after just three weeks of the bombardment of Gaza, Omar El Akkad put out a tweet: “One day, when it’s safe, when there’s no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it’s too late to hold anyone accountable, everyone will have always been against this.” This tweet was viewed over 10 million times.
One Day Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This chronicles the deep fracture which has occurred for Black, brown, Indigenous North Americans, as well as the upcoming generation, many of whom had clung to a thread of faith in western ideals, in the idea that their countries, or the countries of their adoption, actually attempted to live up to the values they espouse.
This book is a reckoning with what it means to live in the west. The Fire Next Time for a generation that understands we’re undergoing a shift in the so-called ‘rules-based order,’ a generation that understands the west can no longer be trusted to police and guide the world, or its own cities and campuses. It draws on intimate details of Omar’s own story as an emigrant who grew up believing in the western project, who was catapulted into journalism by the rupture of 9/11.
This is his heartsick breakup letter with the west. It is a breakup we are watching all over the world, on college campuses, on city streets, and the consequences of this rupture will be felt by all of us. His book is for all the people who want something better than what the west has served up. This is the book for our time. OMAR EL AKKAD is an author and journalist. He was born in Egypt, grew up in Qatar, moved to Canada as a teenager and now lives in the United States. He is a two-time winner of both the Pacific Northwest Booksellers’ Award and the Oregon Book Award. His books have been translated into 13 languages. His debut novel, American War, was named by the BBC as one of 100 novels that shaped our world. Elamin Abdelmahmoud is the host of CBC Radio’s daily arts, pop culture and entertainment show Commotion and a former writer for BuzzFeed News. His work has appeared in the Globe and Mail, Maclean's, Rolling Stone and others. Elamin is the author of Son of Elsewhere: A Memoir in Pieces. Founded in 2008 in commemoration of the 60th year of the Nakba, the Toronto Palestine Film Festival is a volunteer-run festival dedicated to showcasing diverse Palestinian narratives and talents through cinema, music, art, cuisine and literature to audiences year-round. TPFF 2025 will be held September 24-28 in theatre and online. Join our newsletter to learn about exciting upcoming events www.tpff.ca.

FREE Shakespeare By the Lakes VI: Macbeth (Haig Park) | Haig Park, Braddon
Mar 1, 2025 (UTC+10)
Street
Shakespeare By the Lakes VI: Macbeth Join us for an unforgettable evening of live twilight theatre at Haig Park! This year, we're partnering with The Q to bring you Shakespeare's action-packed tragedy Macbeth. Tuggeranong Town Park will transform into the eerie beauty of the Scottish Highlands as the infamous witches weave their dark prophecies and Macbeth rises to power amidst a whirlwind of murder, secrets, and the occult, with a dynamic cast (and maybe a few audience members) who will bring the play to life. Gather your friends, pack a picnic or takeaway from nearby Braddon, and strap in for a night of greed, ambition, and deception. Whether you’re a Shakespeare aficionado or new to the Bard, don’t miss this chance to experience Shakespeare’s shortest, sharpest, and bloodiest play like never before, as nature and theatre collide. As with all Lakespeare shows, we encourage audience members of all ages and love introducing younger audience members to the joys of watching Shakespeare. Parents should note that this production is faithful to the original text and contains some adult themes (battles, murder and the like). Lakespeare is an independent theatre company on a mission to make high-quality theatre accessible to Canberrans and beyond. Visit our webpage closer to show time for more information about the show, the cast and what we do. And don't forget to follow us on Facebook or Instagram. Even though this is a free event, its important that you register for tickets. Registration helps us to understand likely numbers. This helps our vendors and sponsors. Registration enables us to keep you informed regarding any new developments related to the performance. What can I bring into the event? Please bring sunscreen (daytime shows), a rug, friends, family, food and drink. A chair if you want to go in the chair zone. A blanket if it looks cold. We have vendors (more detail provided closer to the show), too, who can provide a range of sweet and savoury food options, coffee and alcohol. Show information 1. SBTL is an outdoor event and we all must adapt to the weather conditions. The show must go on (and usually does) unless there is a really severe weather forecast or event. So be prepared - there is no such thing as bad weather, there is only the wrong clothes. If we do need to cancel a show we'll contact you via the email you provide in your registration (and we also aim to keep you updated via our social media platforms). 2. Chairs are only allowed in designated areas. So everyone can see, chairs will necessarily be set back from the main playing area. 3. So everyone can see, umbrellas are not to be used during the performance. Patrons should use hooded rain jackets or ponchos. 4. Lakespeare reserves the right to add or remove performances, change venues and/or alter the start times of events. Of course, we only do this for good reasons and give you as much warning as possible.

Terracotta Dragon Sculpture Pottery Workshop | The Walronds
Mar 1, 2025 (UTC+0)
Street
Hello, My name is Helen McCormick and I'm a local ceramic artist and teacher. I've been creating objects from clay for the past 28 years, and I still absolutely love the process. I am passionate about teaching and have created this workshop to share my skills, knowledge and experience with anyone who would like to have a go for the first time or to develop their skills further. This workshop is designed to be a relaxed, friendly space where you can meet new people and have the opportunity to create, learn and have fun. Throughout the day you will learn how to hand-build your dragon sculpture from clay using traditional techniques. We will finish by learning how to add texture and details to your work, refining your masterpiece. All materials and equipment will be provided. Tea and Coffee will be available throughout the workshop. The only thing you need to bring is a packed lunch and an apron or wear old clothes. After the workshop, I will carefully take your sculpture home and fire it in my kiln. These sculptures are not glazed as the terracotta will age beautifully in your garden over time. Your sculpture will be ready to collect approximately 6 weeks after the workshop from the Walronds. I will let you know the date and time. NB: I am happy to store your work for 6 months from the collection date, after which time your work will be donated to charity. There is FREE parking at the Walronds. The carpark is located at the back of the building. To access the carpark you will need to turn up Tiverton Road off the High Street, and then turn left just before the fire station onto Shortlands Lane. It is a narrow lane and easily missed. Drive a few yards up the lane and you will see the sign for the carpark on the left. Turn left and follow the drive through the gate ahead. Here is a link to Google Maps which should take you right to the carpark entrance. https://goo.gl/maps/JKfioUFi3FCSnCHJ9 Please follow me on Instagram and Facebook to see photographs of work made in my previous workshops. Artist in Residence - Artist Talk with Michael Day | Jelly
Mar 1, 2025 (UTC+0)
Street
Sheffield-based artist Michael Day will be resident at Jelly during February. His recent work explores his own autobiography and class background. This body of work has been part of a process of unpacking and reevaluating his early years spent in and around the Dee Road estate in Reading. After feeling like an imposter at the end of his art-based PhD, he began to interpret his class background and the location he grew up in as formative of his experience of feeling out of place in academia and in the art world.
Michael will be sharing examples of his work and will discuss the phases of his practice and how he arrived at his current interest in the Dee Road estate. Dr. Michael Day is an artist, researcher, lecturer, and occasional curator. He is interested in the ways that external factors can structure individual experience, and produces artworks that explore relationships between technology, class, and agency.
His practice is interdisciplinary and uses a range of media and technologies, including digital media, sound, installation, drawing and print. He has exhibited and screened work in venues across the UK, in Europe, and internationally. Our workshops and events are subsidised and in most cases we are able to offer our workshops for a nominal fee. If you are able we have an option to donate. All donations help us to continue our work to make space for art for everyone every day. By attending this workshop you are agreeing to act in accordance with our workshop behaviour policy which can be viewed here: https://www.jelly.org.uk/policies Find us in our next space on the 1st Floor in Broad St Mall. We are the last unit nearest the public toilets. Inclusivity, safety, respect, confidentiality and consent are fundamental principles at Jelly workshops and events. Frequently asked questions: We are a small team working behind the scenes answering your questions. If you email us via eventbrite or via our website we will answer as soon as we can. We are able to offer a refund (minus eventbrite fees) or transfer your ticket to a future event if you contact us a minimum of 7 days before the event starts. After this time we cannot offer any refunds or transfers. 48 hours before the event you can contact us to enquire about a waiting list and we will endeavour to transfer your ticket. The Music of ABBA | Emmanuel (form. George Street) United Church
Mar 1, 2025 (UTC-5)
Street
Anni-Frid Lyngstad used the initials of the band members' first names to create the palindrome ABBA. Under this name, the band became a pop supergroup. Even though ABBA disbanded in 1982, the group's music continues to live on in compilation albums, the wildly successful musical and movie Mamma Mia!, and even as a reunited group in 2016 with a new album released in 2021. But little of that history matters because ABBA’s music is what keeps toes tapping, ear worms “worming”, and karaoke machines humming. SOS ; I Do, I Do, I Do ; Mamma Mia ; Dancing Queen ; Knowing Me, Knowing You ; Take a Chance on Me ... see! You’re humming the tunes already! Join us as our talented local band of instrumentalists, soloists, and Peterborough Singers get you dancing in the aisles and singing along to the music of ABBA. Featuring: Barry Haggarty (guitar), Andrew Affleck (bass), Curtis Cronkwright (drums), Alexia Preston (piano) Concert sponsor: David Goyette More information: https://www.peterboroughsingers.com

DONOVAN WOODS - LIVE at Knox Hall with special guest BILLY RAFFOUL | Knox Hall
Mar 1, 2025 (UTC-5)
Street
DonovanWoods has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 per ticket goes to supporting The Unison Fund and their work to provide counseling and emergency relief services to the Canadian music community. Throughout his distinguished career, Donovan Woods has built a devoted following who cling to the acclaimed songwriter’s every word. Never one to mince words, Woods is one of music’s most vulnerable storytellers and on his forthcoming studio album, Donovan takes that a step further. Honest and unflinching, on Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now, his seventh studio album, Woods takes a long look inside and isn’t necessarily thrilled with what he sees. For an artist who isn’t afraid to bear his soul, this is as emotionally gritty as he has ever been. Long known as a masterful storyteller, Woods is at his absolute best on Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now. Across the album’s 12 sparse, intimate songs, Woods finds himself reflecting on the ups and downs he has been through since 2020. His writing allowed him to open up and address the complexities of life that he has been going through. The album, he notes, serves as “a funeral to the life he was living.” Sonically, Woods decided to take a different approach. As Woods continues to work on himself, Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now is the portrait of a songwriter at his creative best. Addressing the truths and pains of life is never easy, and here, he does so in a way that’s brutally honest. After all, that’s what great songwriters do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Billy Raffoul - The communion between an artist and a room full of people endures is one of the most sacred forms of connection. As emotion and energy transfer back-and-forth, this interchange of feelings might be the closest thing we have to true magic in our physical world. Billy Raffoul writes music with this moment in mind. Guitar in hand and microphone on, his voice echoes with a graceful grit that comes right from the gut as he tells stories straight from the heart. After generating hundreds of millions of streams and earning acclaim from American Songwriter, Paste, and more, the award-winning Ontario singer, songwriter, and producer continues to captivate on his debut EP for Nettwerk. During 2017, Billy made his debut with the single “Driver.” Following the 1975 EP and The Running Wild EP, he released his debut full-length, A Few More Hours at YYZ in 2020. The single “Acoustic” generated over 60.7 million Spotify streams as “Easy Tiger” surpassed 19.4 million Spotify streams. The same year, he maintained this momentum with International Hotel and shared bills with Kings of Leon, Kaleo, X Ambassadors and more. Reaching another level, 2021 saw him garner the SOCAN Songwriting Prize for the single “Western Skies.” Despite the Pandemic lockdown, he focused on writing and recording as much as possible. He collaborated with longtime creative cohorts Justin Zuccato and Mike Crossey remotely and occasionally in-person, piecing the EP together over these sessions.

LCMS proudly presents one of Canada’s most distinguished and highly revered pianists, Jane Coop, and the highly acclaimed principal cellist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Henry Shapard. The multi award-winning musicians have graced some of the most famous halls in the world, and will come together in the intimate setting of the Rose Gellert Hall to share an energetic and vibrant program featuring the wonderful chamber music of Beethoven, including his Sonatas and Variations for cello and piano. “It is difficult to pinpoint what makes this pianist so expressive, for in her playing everything works together: technique, sense of style, tempo, sensitivity of touch, phrasing and dynamic shading. Coop has that extra something that lets a pianist become a poet.”- THE GAZETTE, Montreal“There’s a musical instinctiveness in playing, which is breathtaking because every time he plays, it sounds like he’s playing it for the first time — there’s that wonderful spontaneity.”- William Boughton, conductor of the Yale Symphony OrchestraLearn more about this concert Subscribe to the Season and Save!
