Exhibition and Art Talk with Debbie Yeboah | Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge

Renaturation: Fractured Identities, Future Selves by Debbie Yeboah This exhibition of work by Debbie Yeboah explores three interconnected concepts that engage with the reconstitution of the Ghanaian self in response to the ongoing effects of coloniality. The works offer a meditation on healing; using art as a tangible medium to address the colonial wound, while envisioning alternative futures. The three concepts are enmeshed in the artworks. Renaturation addresses the rebuilding of the fractured self, the threshold creates liminal, imaginative spaces of transformation; and braiding as re-membering symbolises the relational process of reconstructing identity in community. Each piece reflects the artist's exploration of these ideas, using bold, saturated colours and the recurring motif of braiding to signify the physical and emotional processes of putting the self back together. Through a dynamic body of work-including paintings, mixed media works, and a braided hair installation the artist makes visible the themes of healing, identity, and Ghanaian cultural resilience. This exhibition invites viewers into a reflective and creative dialogue about the ways in which art can be a critical and regenerative practice, engaging with both personal and communal identities in the pursuit of decolonial futures. The talk will be followed by a drinks reception. This display has been generously supported by Rachel Polonsky, Fellow of Murray Edwards College. Debbie Yeboah is a Ghanaian artist, researcher and educator. Debbie, a proud member of Murray Edwards College, has recently submitted her PhD thesis in Education. her research and art is closely entwined, with both informing the other. Her work critically engages with the enduring effects of coloniality on knowledge, identity art and culture. Information Source: Murray Edwards College | eventbrite

Roundtable discussion with 'The Other Story' artists | Howard Theatre

Nov 27, 2024 (UTC+0)
Cambridge
Arts
The Other Story: Afro-Asian Artists in Post-War Britain was a groundbreaking exhibition curated in 1989 by Rasheed Araeen, whose work is currently on show at Downing’s Heong Gallery. A landmark moment in British art history, the show highlighted the contributions and creativity of African and Asian artists who had been marginalized by the mainstream art world in post-war Britain. The Other Story explored social issues of race, identity, and the politics of representation. It continues to encourage discussions on post-colonialism and multiculturalism in the arts, as well as on diversity and inclusion in the art world today. For this roundtable discussion, Dr Saul Nelson (Teaching Associate in Twentieth-Century Art, University of Cambridge) and Alina Khakoo (PhD student on the Criticism and Culture programme at the University of Cambridge) will be in conversation with a number of artists involved in the 1989 exhibition, including Eddie Chambers, Gavin Jantjes and Keith Piper. About the exhibition: Rasheed Araeen: A British Story condenses Araeen’s artistic career into a representative selection of work across painting, collage, sculpture, and participatory installations. Works include Zero to Infinity, and his ‘Reading Room’ installation, which will offer visitors the opportunity to engage with the artist’s own writings, many of which were first published in the journal Third Text, which he founded in 1987. The show emphasizes the indivisibility of Araeen’s formal artistic language from his post-colonial political awareness and highlights his imaginative artistic responses to British political and cultural life over the last fifty years. Tyler Hay is a remarkable pianist, a truly original personality, known for his bold approach to programming, refined musicianship, and his formidable technique. For this concert, he is presenting two monumental sonatas, both inspired by Goethe’s Faust, introduced by little known miniatures. If the Liszt Sonata is one of the most often heard works from the composer, the Rachmaninoff first sonata has long been overshadowed by the more famous second. However the tables are turning, and in recent years, a growing number of performances by major pianists has revealed a fascinating work, demanding both for pianists and audiences, both rewarding in equal measure. The second movement, in particular, is one of the highest inspirations of its author.
