Literary Arts
The event will be hosted by arts writer and presenter of the BBC Scotland Afternoon Show, Nicola Meighan. This is an opportunity to listen to excerpts from Matilda In The Middle read by Katy Lironi. Nicola will also be chatting with film director, Grant McPhee, about his new book, Postcards from Scotland: Scottish Independent Music 1983-1995. The evening also features an acoustic set from Katy (The Fizzbombs, The evening also features an acoustic set from Katy (The Fizzbombs, The Secret Goldfish) and Douglas MacIntyre (Article 58, The Secret Goldfish, Sexual Objects, Port Sulphur). There will also be an opportunity to buy copies of Katy's memoir and Grant's book, signed by the authors. Katy’s story is first and foremost, a musical, family memoir. Both parents come with their own lives immersed in the Scottish music scene of the 1980s – Katy enmeshed in everything that was Edinburgh-based C86 indie pop, while her bandmate and future husband, Douglas MacIntyre, embraced the Scottish post-punk era. At the turn of the century, just as the the couple’s musical projects are in the midst of a creative overload, children start to appear at an alarming rate. Six years and five children later, SandFest was born – raising thousands of pounds over the next decade for Down’s Syndrome charities. A family. Functioning. JUST – music is always there to save the day. At the centre of this family saga is the indomitable spirit of middle child, Matilda, whose Down Syndrome is, in equal parts, challenging and an amazing gift within the family dynamic! In part, with the raw and unflinching honesty Katy tells of her encounters with the medical profession and educational authorities, which can be described as alternating between difficult and wonderful. At heart, this is the story of a family’s love of music and how it has provided purpose, forged relationships and created harmony in every aspect of their lives … with Matilda in the middle. MATILDA IN THE MIDDLE TESTIMONIES “A story with a huge beating heart at its core and music riding through every page like a swashbuckling heroine!” – Mel Giedroyc “A heartening, warm and bright-eyed book about family, music, embracing chaos, and the quiet magic of everyday wonder. ” – Nicola Meighan Information Source: Into Books | eventbrite

Sam Horton in conversation with Hannah Kaner | Blackwell's Bookshop

We are looking forward to welcoming Sam Horton along to the shop on Thursday 3rd October at 7pm as he discusses his luscious dark fantasy debut of faith, Cornish folklore and grief, Gorse, with Hannah Kaner. Cornwall, 1786. For years, the villagers of Mirecoombe have turned to their Keeper, the old and battle-scarred Lord Pelagius Hunt, mediator between the worlds of men and fey, for help. But this is a time of change. Belief in the old ways, in the piskies and spriggans, has dimmed, kindled instead in the Reverend Cleaver’s fiery pulpit. His church stands proud above the mire; God’s name is whispered, hushed, loved. And now, death stalks Mirecoombe on the moor. There are corpses in the heather. There is blood in the gorse. Nancy Bligh is determined to do what Pel will not: maintain the balance between the fey and the human world, be the Keeper that he refuses to be. Blessed with natural sight, friend to spriggans, piskies and human locals of Mirecoombe, Nancy has power that Pel never had and never lets her use. But as Mirecoombe falls into darkness, perhaps her time has come. A poignant and lyrical examination of faith, love and grief, Gorse asks what do we choose to believe, and how does that shape who we are? Sam K. Horton lives above the moor in Cornwall, drawing on its wild landscape, wide skies and windblown folklore for his work. He trained as a costume designer before moving into visual art. It was during his last creative project that he discovered his talent for writing. Gorse is his debut novel. - Doors: 6.30pm, event starts: 7pm, please arrive early to secure a good seat. Tickets are £3and there is a Ticket & Book option which includes a signed copy of Gorse. The bookshop has level access, events are seated and speakers use microphones.
