*Please note that this is a Meet and Greet and signing with the author, not an interview/talk.* Tickets include a copy of the book and an opportunity to meet and chat with the author. Captain Michael Barritt is a former Hydrographer of the Navy, head of the Royal Navy’s hydrographic profession, and a successor to Captain Thomas Hurd. In Nelson's Pathfinders, he tells the remarkable story of how a handful of intrepid scientific navigators underpinned British naval dominance in the conflict with Napoleon During the Napoleonic Wars, more than twice as many British warships were lost to shipwreck than in battle. The Royal Navy’s fleets had to operate in unfamiliar seas and dangerous coastal waters, where navigational ignorance was as great a threat as enemy guns. If Britain was to win the war, improved intelligence was vital. In this landmark account, Michael Barritt reveals how a cadre of specialist pathfinders led by Captain Thomas Hurd enabled Britain’s Hydrographic Office to meet this need. Sounding amongst hazards on the front line of conflict, alert for breaks in weather or onset of swell, these daring sailors gathered vital strategic data that would eventually secure the upper hand against Britain’s adversaries. Tracing this pathfinding around Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, Barritt shows how the honing of this skill set revolutionised the British way of war at sea—ultimately securing a lasting naval dominance. A must for all maritime enthusiasts. “Barritt’s research into the extraordinary accomplishments of the young British Hydrographic Service in the wars of 1793–1815 matches their own diligence. A fine account of a vital factor in the defeat of Napoleon.”—Richard Woodman, author of Neptune’s Trident “Michael Barritt is uniquely qualified to unravel and explain the complicated and patient work of British naval surveyors and chart makers. He does so brilliantly, aided by a profusion of minutely-detailed contemporary illustrations.”—Roger Knight, author of Convoys Information Source: Linghams Bookshop | eventbrite

Our November teen book club pick is perfect for the spooky season. Let's Split Up by Bill Wood is a nail-biting and perfectly formed Thriller. This is SCOOBY DOO meets PRETTY LITTLE LIARS. “Let's Split Up is a bingeable page-turner full of fun, frights and friendship. When hot it-couple Brad and Shelley are murdered in a manor on the edge of town, a group of teen friends investigate. Set in Sanera, a small community in California where rumour spreads as fast as the fire on the day of the killings, the theory is the old ghoul who haunts the house after his own murder hundreds of years ago has finally taken revenge. As Cam, Jonesy, Amber and new-girl Buffy investigate, the rumour feels closer to the truth than they ever dared think possible, and as they enter the mansion themselves, the idea of splitting up to find evidence will prove to be either the best ... or worst decision of all... Compelling, original and twisty, I devoured it in one sitting. Bill Wood is a fresh and exciting new voice in YA” - Kathryn Foxfield, author of Good Girls Die First Iconic. Perfect for anyone with a Scream and Scooby Doo gap in their hearts! - Andy Darcy Theo, author of The Light That Binds Us A fun, fast slasher as full of heart as it is hijinks - Sarah Underwood, author Lies We Sing at Sea It's £5 to come, this price includes a drink from our cafe. If you'd like a copy of the book too, it's 10% off at £8.09 Information Source: Linghams Bookshop | eventbrite

Arts Painting
Following on from our hugely successful Summer workshop inspired by the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, in this session we will focus on the unique creativity of contemporary Brazilian artist, Romero Britto, using his bold, modern and colourful art as our inspiration. Romero Britto is an artist, painter, serigrapher, and sculptor who combines elements of cubism, pop art, and graffiti painting in his work, using vibrant colours and striking patterns as a visual expression of hope, dreams, and happiness. Using acrylic paint markers, we will encapsulate the spirit of Britto's work by recreating some of his famous designs on paper and then on glass: the final aim of the workshop being to produce a decorative tealight holder.* *Suggested use, although you can use it for whatever you like or give as a gift! All materials, including a battery operated tealight, included, as well as light refreshments. Ideal for ages 8-12. Information Source: Linghams Bookshop | eventbrite

An extraordinary piece of writing. Brilliantly readable.’ – PATRICK MCGRATH ‘Candid and compelling. A must-read.’ – BRYONY GORDON My mind is full of scorpions. A cerebral itch, impossible to scratch. I know these creatures well, but they know me better. They answer to another name, this nest of scorpions, the writhing black mass that lives inside my head… For as long as Tuppence Middleton can remember, she has struggled with obsessive thoughts and compulsions. She visualises her OCD as scorpions inhabiting her mind, something to be hidden that impacts her life daily: Have I killed my cat? When was the last time that person in front of me vomited? How many people have touched this door handle since it was cleaned?Should I tap the outside of the airplane to save my loved ones from harm?Often used as a shorthand for tidiness or as the punchline of a joke, OCD is one of society’s most misunderstood disorders and it’s rarely spoken about with such honesty and openness. In this beautifully written, moving and often darkly funny memoir, Tuppence recounts what it feels like to share your mind with a nest of scorpions Information Source: Linghams Bookshop | eventbrite

We are thrilled to welcome back best selling author Hallie Rubenhold of The Five with her new book. In 1910, the name Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen entered legend. The remains of his wife, the music hall performer, Belle Elmore were discovered in his London cellar, while he and his secretary Ethel Le Neve were found masquerading as father and son on a ship bound for Canada. Meanwhile, in New York, the Irish family of Charlotte Bell, Crippen’s first wife were investigating the mysterious circumstances of her death, nearly 20 years earlier. For over a century, Belle Elmore’s murder has been retold as a tale about a cold-blooded killer and the heroic men who brought him to justice, however the real story is one that hasn’t been heard. It is told by the ranks of women who dominated the case, not only the larger-than-life Belle, the rebellious and ambitious Ethel, and the courageous Charlotte, but an army of Edwardian actresses, circus performers, singers, horse trainers, landladies, secretaries, bookkeepers and medical professionals whose version of events has been drowned out by those of law enforcement and even by the murderer himself. Their perspectives paint a chilling picture of an Edwardian world, not so entirely distant from our own. Information Source: Linghams Bookshop | eventbrite
