Join Professor Elaine Kelly for the inaugural lecture on the musical relations between the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the postcolonial world. This lecture explores the Soviet Bloc states' alliances with newly independent postcolonial countries in the latter half of the twentieth century. The lecture focuses on the role of music in East German solidarity politics, shedding light on the rhetoric and practices of the GDR's interactions with its postcolonial partners. Through music, East Germans and international students and workers in the GDR expressed solidarity and supported socialist assistance packages to countries like Cambodia. The circulation of music and performers facilitated ambitions of socialist worldmaking, but also exposed the limitations and complexities of socialist solidarity. Professor Elaine Kelly, a leading scholar in music and politics, will deliver this lecture at the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Chida-Razvi's research encompasses various aspects of Mughal and Persianate art and architecture, with a particular focus on the reign of Emperor Jahangir.
