Shoko’s Smile by Choi Eunyoung | Pearse Street Library
Nov 30–Dec 1, 2024 (UTC+0)
Dublin
In these seven stories, Choi writes in a precise and unembellished style, to portrait the lives of young women in South Korea. The intimate is shown against sometimes a very complex political backdrop, but in a hopeful tone. In the title story, a friendship between an exchange student and her host sister follows them from adolescence to adulthood. In 'A Song from Afar', a young woman grapples with the death of her lover, travelling to Russia to search for information about the deceased. In 'Secret', the parents of a teacher killed in the Sewol ferry sinking hide the news of her death from her grandmother. Toji (토지) Book Club aims to explore Korean culture through novels and short stories to better understand the country's recent history, society dynamics and of course to enjoy the exceptional contemporary literature coming from South Korea. We have borrowed our name from Park Kyung-Ri’s novel, because we would like Toji to be a space to discover more about South Korea paying special attention to the female prospective.

Dec 1, 2024 (UTC+0)
Dublin
Milk Wilson's essay ‘We that Swarm Among the Living and the Dead’ was commissioned for A L T A R and read on a wild stormy night in Goldenbridge Cemetery. Mick returns to interrogate the spatial segregation between the communities of the living and those of the dead. Presenting the body as both a living ensemble of self and not-self, Mick’s essay reflects on the uncanny realization of the self as multitude and asks what does a recognition of our immanent movement towards the crowd of the dead imply? A L T A R publication is realised and edited by Clodagh Emoe and Donal Lally, and designed by Alex Synge, working under the studio name The First 47. A L T A R features photographs by Kate-Bowe O’Brien and David Conway and film stills by artist/filmmaker Jenny Brady and Barry Lynch. A L T A R was funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, Architecture Project Award in 2022 and supported by Common Ground, Dublin Cemeteries Trust, IMMA, NCAD and TU Dublin.
