The Typographic Imaginary in Early Modern English Literature | The Southern Belle
Feb 20, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Hove
Join the conversation with Rachel Stenner as she explores the interplay between the printing press and literary works in her session on "The Typographic Imaginary in Early Modern English Literature." Stenner's innovative perspective delves into how writers during the late medieval and early modern periods imaginatively and self-consciously explored the materiality of the book. By examining the physicality of the book within literary creations, Stenner's research integrates Book History and literary studies, shedding light on the evolving media landscape and its impact on society.
In this session, Stenner takes us on a literary journey through late Medieval and early modern texts, delving into anxieties arising from the rise of the printing press and fears of social decline. Notable authors such as Robert Copland, William Baldwin, George Gascoigne, Thomas Nashe, Edmund Spenser, John Taylor, Edward Ward, and Alexander Pope are explored as they comment on and dissect the print trade.
Rachel Stenner is a Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Sussex and the author of the book, "The Typographic Imaginary in Early Modern English Literature." The event will take place at The Southern Belle in Hove, located at 3 Waterloo Street. Join us on February 20, 2024, at 7pm for an insightful evening discussing the intricate threads that connect literature, technology, the materiality of the book, and societal dynamics. Admission is free, so don't miss this opportunity to expand your understanding of Early Modern English Literature.
