Third Place Books welcomes Spencer Sunshine to our Seward Park store for a discussion of his book, Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism: The Origins and Afterlife of James Mason's Siege. A new wave of aspiring neo-Nazi terrorists has arisen. And they have a bible: James Mason’s Siege, which praises terrorism, serial killers, and Charles Manson. Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism, based on years of archival work and interviews, documents for the first time the origins of Siege. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism . . .A new wave of aspiring neo-Nazi terrorists has arisen—including the infamous Atomwaffen Division. And they have a bible: James Mason’s Siege, which praises terrorism, serial killers, and Charles Manson. Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism, based on years of archival work and interviews, documents for the first time the origins of Siege. First, it shows how Mason’s vision arose from debates by 1970s neo-Nazis who splintered off the American Nazi Party/National Socialist White People's Party and spun off a terrorist faction. Second, it unveils how four 1980s countercultural figures—musicians Boyd Rice and Michael Moynihan, Feral House publisher Adam Parfrey, and Satanist Nikolas Schreck—discovered, promoted, and published Mason. Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism explores a previously overlooked period and unearths the hidden connections between a countercultural clique and violent neo-Nazis—which together have set the template for today’s Neo-nazi terrorist underground. It is obligatory reading for those interested in contemporary terrorism, postwar countercultures, and the history of the U.S. Far Right and neo-Nazism. Spencer Sunshine (spencersunshine.com) has written about the Far Right for two decades, publishing on platforms like the Southern Poverty Law Center, Daily Beast, Truthout, and JTA. His latest book is Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism: The Origins and Afterlife of James Mason's Siege (Routledge, 2024). Registration is required in advance. About Inspired and Outraged. . .A remarkable autobiography—written entirely in free verse—of Alice Rothchild's journey from 1950's good girl to irreverent, feisty, feminist obstetrician-gynecologist forging her own direction in the contradictory, sexist world of medicine. As a child who came of age in the turbulent 1960s, she was compelled to create a path in the often outrageous, male-dominated medical field, repeatedly finding herself to be a first: accepted into an ob-gyn residency, opening an all-woman practice, working with midwives, challenging the status quo, shaped by her early involvement with Our Bodies Ourselves. Rothchild's poems are steeped in the often-shocking history of medicine and the conflicted sexual politics of the second half of the twentieth century. Alice Rothchild is a physician, author, and filmmaker who loves storytelling that pushes boundaries and engages in unexpected conversations. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1970 and Boston University School of Medicine in 1974. She practiced obstetrics and gynecology for almost 40 years and served as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Harvard Medical School. She writes and lectures widely, authored three books on health and human rights in Israel/Palestine, two novels for children, contributed to a number of anthologies and poetry journals, and directed a documentary, Voices Across the Divide. She received Boston Magazine’s Best of Boston’s Women Doctors Award, was named in Feminists Who Changed America 1963–1975, had her portrait painted for Robert Shetterly’s Americans Who Tell the Truth project, and was named a Peace Pioneer by the American Jewish Peace Archive. About Bring Back Your People.. . .This mouthy, practical guide from activist, preacher, and Poor People's Campaign organizer Aaron Scott offers ten ways regular people can resist and counter-recruit those who have been seduced by White Christian nationalist ideas. For White folks alarmed by the rise of Christian nationalism comes this mouthy, practical guide to resisting, organizing, and holding conversations with your cousin Randy or anyone else who has been misled by White Christian nationalist ideas. The rise of White Christian nationalism seems impossible to stop. We need a road map to countering recruitment. And we needed it yesterday. Aaron Scott, a second-generation preacher, third-generation organizer, and leader with the Poor People's Campaign, has watched loved ones and peers get recruited into White Christian nationalism. Here, he shares strategies of relationship and conversation for those of us who don't know what to do. And he dishes out harsh words. Sure, you can invite your cousin Randy to the wine-and-cheese reception with your candidate. But Randy's pulling the night shift, and the Proud Boys are more than willing to give him a ride to their barbecue if he can't afford the price of gas. Somebody once hooked Randy with a story about the world, Scott reminds us. That story was false, but it gave Randy meaning and connection. We've got to give him something better to bring him back. Salty, smart, and searing, Bring Back Your People offers ten ways regular-ass folks can draw others toward a better vision of faith, politics, and our common life. It answers questions like: Who are White Christian nationalists targeting? (Hint: most White folks . . . and beyond.) How do I talk to my hairdresser about it? (Carefully.) Why is it gaining steam so fast? (It's not; you're just catching up.) Along the way Scott introduces a counter-history of White people organizing for real justice, and even what that ornery abolitionist John Brown can offer us today. If you're frightened by the way White Christian nationalism mesmerizes so many--grab this lifeline and hang on tight. Aaron Scottis a third-generation organizer, a second-generation preacher, and a dad. He was born and raised in rural Upstate New York, and has lived and worked in the Northwest for the past seventeen years. Aaron holds a masters degree in Biblical Studies from Union Theological Seminary and has been organizing with poor, homeless, and incarcerated people for over twenty years. Aaron has served as the co-founder of Chaplains on the Harbor, on the national steering committee of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, and is currently the Gender Justice Staff Officer for the Presiding Bishop’s Office of The Episcopal Church. He lives in Tacoma. About Third Place Books Founded in 1998 in Lake Forest Park, Washington, Third Place Books is dedicated to the creation of a community around books and the ideas inside them.
