Rezonance Ensemble: Folk of the Baroque | St. David's Anglican Church
Feb 2, 2025 (UTC-5)
Toronto
Who were the people playing this music, anyway? Were they at all like us? Did they also hate Mondays? Rezonance brings you a lighthearted look at the everyday, with music that incorporates folk elements as well as amusing stories about the composers and musicians of the time. Works to be performed include: Variations on ‘Hit Her on the Bum’ (our favourite title), folk tunes by O’Carolan, adaptations by Geminiani, and more! Rezonance Baroque Ensemble is one of the most exciting groups on Toronto’s classical music scene. Unafraid of improvisation and experimenting with new concert formats, and already known for giving captivating performances that resonate with today’s audiences, Rezonance is one of the foremost chamber music interpreters in Toronto. Inspired by history and informed by the present, Rezonance leads audiences through the discovery of under-appreciated and unusual works, and new ways of hearing the classics, in a manner that is intimate, accessible, and fun, while maintaining the highest possible artistry. St. David's Anglican Church, 49 Donlands Ave. Doors: 3:30pm Concert: 4:00-5:00pm Seating is unassigned. ACCESSIBILITY: If you are in need of assistance accessing the venue, please find one of our volunteers wearing a black and orange sticker and they will direct you to someone who can assist you. Toronto
Gala in-person world premiere of God’s Trombones, a poetic song cycle commissioned from Canadian concert pianist and composer Stewart Goodyear by The Nathaniel Dett Chorale. Guest artist – Stewart Goodyear About the ChoraleThe Nathaniel Dett Chorale is Canada’s first professional choral group dedicated to Afrocentric music of all styles. These trained, outstanding vocalists have shared the stage with internationally recognized artists such as Juno Award-winning jazz pianist Joe Sealy; opera star Kathleen Battle and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra; the Signal Hill Alumni Choir of Tobago, West Indies; and the Concert Choir of Hampton University, Virginia. The Chorale has also performed at events honouring world leaders Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Barack Obama, and personalities Muhammad Ali and Oscar Peterson. Founded in 1998, The Nathaniel Dett Chorale’s vision is to be a premier performer of Afrocentric composers, and to be a touchstone for the education of audiences and communities regarding the full spectrum of Afrocentric choral music. The Chorale is named after internationally renowned African-Canadian composer R. Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943), who performed at prestigious concert halls such as Carnegie Hall and Boston Symphony Hall. Dett was dedicated to the cause of Black music, winning the Bowdoin and Frances Boott prizes in 1920 from Harvard University. The Chorale draws attention not only to Dett’s legacy, but also to the wealth of Afrocentric choral music, and is a professional choral group where persons of African heritage can see themselves represented in the majority. Since its inception in 1998, The Nathaniel Dett Chorale has honoured the memory of its namesake, performing a jubilant and uplifting repertoire extensively throughout Canada and The United States; and delighting national and international audiences with critically-acclaimed concerts and workshops.
