Southampton Town’s largest hamlet is in a state of flux. There are numerous passionate residents offering input, though the conversations are splinteredand many voices are competing. A major proposal by the Shinnecock Nation for a gas station off SunriseHighway — and, in the longer term, development on the bluff at Westwoods — has sparked concern among Hampton Bays residents. But there are other pressures: a developer has amassed parcels andhas a vision for redevelopment, anda battery energy storage system proposal has neighbors alarmed. This Express Session event will bring together many of the players in one room to search for common ground and try to identify successful strategies for moving forward onthe issues affecting Hampton Bays. About Horseshoe Crabs have been around for over 450 million years! And we have come to rely on them. Any vaccine or medical implant must be tested with a compound found in horseshoe crab blood to detect the presence of bacteria. Join us in a state-wide effort to monitor their population and inform policy that will help sustain their population for generations to come. Back to the Bays, an initiative of CCE Marine Program , oversees the monitoring of horseshoe crabs at the Tiana Bayside site, coordinated by Daniell Morris, dm733@cornell.edu . Tiana Bayside 2025 Season Schedule Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Marine Program and Stony Brook University are working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to coordinate and implement this project. The intent of this network is to encourage participants to get involved with our annual horseshoe crab monitoring program on various reference beaches throughout New York’s Marine District. Participants assist with the collection of scientific data that is used to assess the status of horseshoe crabs in NY State, and will help determine the management and conservation of this important species throughout the region.
