The Method & The Madness | Miami Yoga Garage
Feb 28–Mar 2, 2025 (UTC-5)
Miami
Join Wade Oakley for a weekend exploring the rich and evolving tradition of Ashtanga Yoga, including a talk, guided primary & conference, Mysore-style class, two workshops: The Method and The Madness. We’ll dig into the structure of the ashtanga system, examine the “why” of it all, and leave with a fresh lens on daily practice. Schedule: February 28 - March 2, 2024 In-person at MLC Friday, February 28, 2025 Talk + Q&A: The Body as a Vehicle 5:30pm - 7:30pm The body as a vehicle - where are we going, and what are we driving? What does yoga philosophy have to say about asana practice in modern life? What about other movement and activity? In this conference, Wade will share some of his personal journey as it relates to ideas from traditional yogic texts, including the Bhagavad Gita and Yoga Sutras. Saturday, March 1, 2025 Led Primary + Conference 9:00am - 11:00am Experience the traditional Ashtanga Yoga primary series and its collective energetic arc together as we practice in relative unison through the precise vinyasas of primary. Workshop: The Method 1:00pm - 3:00pm In the workshop, we’ll break down the components that make up the scaffolding of our ashtanga yoga system: breath, bandha, drishti. How can these tools turn attention inwards, leave space for exploration, help us learn from the body, and help us build practices that in turn support the lives we want to lead? Be prepared for breathing exercises, discussion, and light movement. Sunday, March 2, 2025 Mysore 7:00am - 9:00am Practice ashtanga yoga with Wade in the traditional Mysore-style, named for the city in India where this method has been developed and taught for generations with individualized instruction. Workshop: The Madness 1:00pm - 3:00pm In this session, we’ll challenge some preconceived notions about the roles of strength and flexibility in Ashtanga yoga with a focus on bandhas in backbending. We’ll tie this into a broader discussion of longevity in practice, including injury prevention (“prehab”), recovery off the mat, and the cultivation of gentle self-discipline. Be prepared for movement, asanas, and drills during this session, which will be accessible and is open to all levels of practitioners. Fee: Full Weekend MLC Members $200 Full Weekend Non-members $230 Single Workshop $65 Note: We accept cancellations up to 30 days prior to the workshop and you will receive full refund minus 10% of the original workshop fee. No refunds are available for cancellations within 30 days of the workshop. Teacher's Bio: Wade began practicing ashtanga yoga at the University of Virginia in 2012 under the guidance of Certified teacher John Bultman and continued his studies in India, making many extended trips to Mysore from 2014 onwards to study with Guruji R. Sharath Jois. In 2018, he was granted Level 2 Authorization by Sharathji and subsequently assisted on multiple seasons in Mysore and Miami. To honor his teacher, Wade strives to practice and teach in the spirit and tradition conveyed by Sharathji in Mysore and around the world. Wade seeks to instill a sense of curiosity and personal ownership in a student’s yoga journey. He firmly believes that the cultivation of an ashtanga yoga practice can be boundlessly enriching, as long as we show up.

Miami
“The Artist as Educator” examines how the presentation of Kabuya Pamela Bowens-Saffo: From the Heights conveys the power of educational legacy and cultural connection. Bowens-Saffo’s parents were teachers, and she has worked as a curator and educator. Presenters Kabuya Pamela Bowens-Saffo, Anita Sharma, and Dr. Alex Cornelius share their scholarship on the role of the artist’s archive, historic preservation, and the necessity to highlight women creatives who are under-studied.
