BOOK LAUNCH: He Used To Do Dangerous Things by Gaia Holmes | The Book Corner Halifax
Jan 16, 2025 (UTC+0)
Halifax
Join us at The Book Corner for the launch of local poet & writer Gaia Holmes' new collection of short stories, He Used To Do Dangerous Things. Gaia will be in conversation with Ra Page, publisher at Comma Press. There will be a reading and discussion, followed by audience Q&A and book signing. --- About the book: A grieving woman tells her counsellor increasingly elaborate and contradictory accounts of the night her partner died... A solitary pensioner, cut off from the world in the depths of lockdown, resorts to sitting in his apartment block's meter room to watch the electricity gauges surge with life... A travelling vending machine operator takes his goldfish with him on his long-haul journeys to alleviate its separation anxiety... The characters in Gaia Holmes' debut fiction collection adopt complex and ingenious mechanisms for processing a world that is at once too close and too far removed, needing to feel the presence of others, whilst also being overwhelmed by it. Bringing with her the open-hearted lyricism, intense textures and inherent strangeness that set her poetry apart, Holmes arrives at the short story as the finished article: a master chronicler of 21st century Britain. --- GAIA HOLMES is the author of three poetry collections, Dr James Graham’s Celestial Bed, Lifting The Piano With One Hand and Where The Road Runs out (Comma Press). She has been a gallery attendant, a cleaner, a lecturer, a lollypop lady and a busker and has lived in churches, caves, deserted beach houses, tall terraces and caravans. Now she is a creative writing tutor and pet/house sitter and lives in Halifax in a tiny flat above the tree line on the top floor of a ramshackle Georgian mansion that Dorothy and William Wordsworth used to visit. Her debut collection of short stories, He Used To Do Dangerous Things, was published in October 2024 by Comma Press. RA PAGE is the CEO and Founder of Comma Press. He has edited over 20 anthologies, including The City Life Book of Manchester Short Stories (Penguin, 1999), The New Uncanny (winner of the Shirley Jackson Award, 2008), and most recently Resist: Stories of Uprising (2019). He has coordinated a number of publisher development initiatives, including Literature Northwest (2004-2013), and the Northern Fiction Alliance (2016-present). Ra has been recognised by the h100 Awards for the last two years running (2019/2020) for his contribution to the Publishing & Writing industry in the UK, and was included in The Bookseller 150 list in 2020.
