Welcome Christina Clancy to Kalamazoo for a reading and discussion of her new book: The Snowbirds. This event will include a 20 minute conversation between Christina and Bonnie Jo Campbell (The Waters, Once Upon A River), a brief Q&A, followed by book signing. More about the book: The Last Thing He Told MemeetsFleishman Is in Troublein this page-turning story of a couple who flee winter in the Midwest for Palm Springs, where they find their relationship at a crossroads. Kim and Grant are at a turning point. A couple for thirty years, their separate but together partnership is running up against the realities of late middle age: Grant’s mother has died, the college where he taught philosophy was shuttered, and their twin girls are grown and gone. Escaping the bitter cold of a Midwestern winter for the hot desert sun of Palm Springs seems as good a solution as any to the more intractable problems they face. When they arrive at Le Desert, a quirky condo community where everyone knows everyone’s business, Kim immediately embraces the opportunity to make new friends and explore a more adventurous side of her personality. Meanwhile, Grant struggles to find his footing in this unfamiliar landscape, leaving Kim to wonder if their relationship can survive the snowbird season. But when Grant goes missing on a hike in the Palm Springs mountains, Kim is forced to consider two terrifying outcomes: either Grant is truly lost, or this time, he’s really left her. Is it ever too late to become the person we wanted to be—and is there still time to change into someone better? The exhilarating, but often confusing transitions of midlife are pitched against the promise and glamour of Palm Springs in this tender, honest story of what it takes to commit to someone for a lifetime. With compassion and humor, Clancy explores the redemptive power of finding ourselves, and of being found. Information Source: this is a bookstore | Bookbug | eventbrite

Sign My Name to Freedom: The Lost Music of Betty Reid Soskin Director: Bryan Gibel | Co-Director: AK Sandhu Join local filmmaker Bryan Gibel and members of the film team at the West Oakland Branch of the Oakland Public Library for a FREE work-in-progress documentary film sample of “Sign My Name to Freedom,” a feature documentary about iconic National Park Ranger Betty Reid Soskin, her hidden life as a singer-songwriter, and her family’s experiences confronting Jim Crow-style segregation on the West Coast. This will be followed by a Q&A and discussion with Director Bryan Gibel, Outreach Producer Stephisha Ycoy-Walton, and a West Oakland Librarian representative. (We apologize that earlier versions of this Eventbrite said Photographer Henry Raulston will be attending! Unfortunately, he will not be able to attend this event, he will be celebrating his Birthday!) Betty gained fame as the oldest Park Ranger in the country after starting that job at the age of 85, and she continued working at the Rosie the Riveter National Historic Site as an interpretive oral historian until she retired at 100. Through her experience as a WWII file clerk for an all-black union auxiliary in Richmond, she helped to reshape the national narrative about home front segregation in the workplace, labor unions, and in the armed forces. The documentary takes Betty’s work for the Park Service as its jumping off point, and then it explores lesser-known aspects of her personal story, focusing in large part on her family’s role as the first African Americans to cross the color line into Walnut Creek, and her hidden life as a singer/songwriter in the years that followed. The film also looks at Betty’s journey in her 90s to reexplore the music she left behind fifty years earlier and her collaborations with younger musicians to give her songs life again. The film team is currently raising funds to complete the documentary while Betty is still with us to experience it, which she very much hopes can happen. Their goal is to finish the film by 2025. Although Betty is doing well at 103, the clock is ticking. Please join us for a celebration of Black Women Taught Us: An Intimate History of Black Feminism. Author Dr. Jenn Jackson will be in conversation with Naledi Yaziyo, followed by Q&A from the audience and book signing. Order your copy of BLACK WOMEN TAUGHT US ABOUT BLACK WOMEN TAUGHT US Jenn M. Jackson, PhD, has been known to bring historical acuity to some of the most controversial topics in America today. Now, in their first book, Jackson applies their critical analysis to the questions that have long energized their work: Why has Black women’s freedom fighting been so overlooked throughout history, and what has our society lost because of our refusal to engage with our forestrugglers’ lessons? A love letter to those who have been minimized and forgotten, this collection repositions Black women’s intellectual and political work at the center of today’s liberation movements. Across eleven original essays that explore the legacy of Black women writers and leaders—from Harriet Jacobs and Ida B. Wells to the Combahee River Collective and Audre Lorde—Jackson sets the record straight about Black women’s longtime movement organizing, theorizing, and coalition building in the name of racial, gender, and sexual justice in the United States and abroad. These essays show, in both critical and deeply personal terms, how Black women have been at the center of modern liberation movements despite the erasure and misrecognition of their efforts. Jackson illustrates how Black women have frequently done the work of liberation at great risk to their lives and livelihoods. For a new generation of movement organizers and co-strugglers, Black Women Taught Us serves as a reminder that Black women were the first ones to teach us how to fight racism, how to name that fight, and how to imagine a more just world for everyone. ABOUT DR. JENN JACKSON Jenn M. Jackson, PhD, is an award-winning professor of political science at Syracuse University and a columnist for Teen Vogue, where they write the popular “Speak On It” column that “explores how today’s social and political life is influenced by generations of racial and gender (dis)order.” A queer genderflux androgynous Black woman, Jackson primary research is in Black Politics with a focus on Black Feminism, racial trauma and threat, gender and sexuality, and social movements. Black Women Taught Us is their first book. ABOUT NALEDI YAZIYO Naledi Yaziyo is a bookseller and curator based in Oakland, Cali. In 2021 she founded Rofhiwa Book Café, a bookstore and coffee shop in Durham, North Carolina. Literary Arts
Attention fellow Wednesday Peeps and Back Issue Bin Divers! Join us at Kona Club for our monthly gathering of the Good Vibes (Comic) Book Club! Each month, we dive into an issue, discussing everything from wild plot twists to how the art hits differently. It's all about fun and good vibes—no hating, just celebrating the good stuff! (Okay, maybe just a little bit of hating.) This meeting, we're covering: New Gods #1Ultimate Spider-Man #12 (The gang is loving this book.)Absolute Wonder Woman #3 (This one is a keeper!)Please grab your comics from Cape & Cowl Comics in Oakland (or your favorite shop). Please don't pirate the books. Support the folks making them. Absolutely LGBTQ+ and POC friendly. Absolutely no Nazis. Every attendee is entered into our little raffle for the most sought-after prize in all of nerdom: the Infinity Bag Prize. Whether you're a seasoned comic book reader or just starting out, all are welcome to share their thoughts and insights. Let’s geek out together over our love for comics! See you there!
