Oct 21, 2023 (UTC-10)ENDED
Honolulu
Surfing Sisterhood Hawai‘i: Wahine Reclaiming the Waves is an event taking place on October 21, 2023, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa William S. Richardson School of Law in Honolulu. This event celebrates the resurgence of female power and creativity in the birthplace of surfing. Mindy Pennybacker, a columnist for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and a Honolulu native, brings the vibrant world of waveriding in the Hawaiian islands to life in her book, Surfing Sisterhood. Through a blend of Hawaiian legends, historical accounts, and interviews with over thirty contemporary female surfers, Pennybacker showcases the passion and freedom that girls and women find in surfing.
Despite facing discouragement and interference from some male surfers who vastly outnumber them in the water, these female surfers refuse to be deterred. Pennybacker recounts how female surfers were pushed aside and underestimated by a male-dominated industry in the past, but they have made a strong comeback. In fact, female surfers are now breaking new ground and achieving remarkable feats. For example, in 2021, Carissa Moore, a five-time world champion from Hawaii, won gold in the Olympic surfing event. In 2022, Moana Jones Wong became the first woman to win the World Surf League championship tour event at Banzai Pipeline, conquering the big, barreling waves that were previously considered too dangerous for female competitions.
Surfing Sisterhood Hawai‘i: Wahine Reclaiming the Waves is a testament to the resilience and determination of female surfers in reclaiming their rightful place in the sport. This event offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history, personal stories, and the unwavering spirit of these remarkable women. Admission to this event is free, and attendees can also have the opportunity to meet Mindy Pennybacker and have their books signed.
