Flow & Focus: Cultivating a Creative Mindset| Adult Class (ages 16+) | Artspace
Jan 11, 2025 (UTC-5)
Davie
This workshop will introduce artists to some of the most recent research, technology and best practices designed to promote peak performance within their creative practice by achieving the flow state. This idea of “peak performance” looks different across a range of disciplines, but in this setting we will be addressing ways to tackle artist’s block and enable free expression that can be applied to any media or individual.
Led by former Artspace Resident, Anna Payne, alongside Neurofeedback Instructor, Marty Previtte, this workshop aims to provide a safe space for artists to better their mental connection to their work and studio practice as a whole. As a professional artist, Anna is concerned with taking care to make relevant and responsive work that is authentic and understands the highs and lows that creative work can bring. This workshop aims to impart some of her strategies and beliefs on how to grapple with this through the creation of self-fulfilling art, while also holding space for others to access and discuss their creative potential.
Participants will learn about the flow state and how to recognize it through several interventions designed by neuroscientists to prepare the brain for work, followed by a creative activity designed to encourage this mental process. If you are currently struggling to finish a piece that can be brought to the workshop, we encourage you to bring this piece and any desired supplies to discuss and progress through it. Otherwise, we will have supplies for you to create an abstract self portrait, or begin a new work entirely while applying your newfound knowledge of flo state. Rather than focus on creating a specific piece for you to take home, we hope to explore and introduce new ideas and practices for you to take back to any creative space. This workshop is ideal for artists looking to overcome artist’s block or to explore new methods of creative thinking. Instructor: Anna Payne Are you an Artspace member? Following studies of Fine Art and Religion at UNC Chapel Hill, she has immersed herself in the local arts community and has become interested in creating a conceptual, formal practice rooted in abstraction that explores relevant subjects through more representational motifs. Since her residency at Artspace, she hopes to continue pursuing this newly introduced element of collaboration in both her studio and public works to further explore concepts of subliminal influence, art as therapy and the psychological phenomena we all experience.
