Calibre Conversations Live - Q&A with author Natalie Marlow | Library of Birmingham (Rep Theatre)
Oct 21, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Birmingham
Join us for an exclusive evening with West Midlands based author Natalie Marlow, as part of Calibre Audio's 50th-anniversary celebrations. This special event will take place at the iconic Library of Birmingham in the Rep Theatre on Monday, 21st October at 7:15 PM. Be part of this incredible evening with Natalie Marlow who will be discussing her latest novel, The Red Hollow, a dark and atmospheric crime story set in the 1930s. The event will feature a live Q&A, where attendees can delve into the inspirations behind her writing and of her gripping new release. There will be books on sale so you can have the opportunity to meet the author and get your book signed. Secure your tickets today and celebrate with us as we mark 50 years of Calibre Audio, bringing books to life for all. About The Red Hollow The Red Hollow transports readers to Warwickshire in 1934, where Red Hollow Hall, a male-only sanitorium, becomes the epicentre of a chilling mystery. With patients fleeing and eerie disturbances escalating, private detective William Garrett and new detective Phyll Hall are drawn into a world where the line between reality and madness blurs. The haunting tale explores themes of the occult, psychological terror, and grisly murder, with a backdrop inspired by the real-life Caldecote Hall. Praise for The Red Hollow: A truly splendid, wicked gem of a book. I loved it.
Tom Mead, author of Death and the Conjuror The Red Hollow is a swirling, Gothic fever-dream of a novel that cements Marlow's place at the very top of the historical crime writing tree.
Mark Wightman, author of Chasing the Tiger Marlow's latest work follows her critically acclaimed debut, Needless Alley which is set in the backstreets of Birmingham, and continues to showcase her unique talent in blending historical settings with dark, compelling narratives. About Natalie Marlow Natalie Marlow is a West Midlands native, deeply connected to her roots in Birmingham. A graduate of the University of East Anglia's MA in Crime Writing, she is currently pursuing her PhD at Birkbeck College, University of London. Her writing is heavily influenced by her working-class background and her family history, particularly her great-grandmother's life on the Birmingham canals. Marlow's dedication to the craft has earned her a spot on Val McDermid's prestigious New Blood panel at the Harrogate crime writing festival in 2023.

Oct 21, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Birmingham
Join us for an exclusive afternoon event with children's author Louie Stowell, as part of Calibre Audio's 50th-anniversary celebrations. This special event will take place at the iconic Library of Birmingham in the Rep Theatre on Monday, 21st October at 4:30 PM. Louie loves to have the chance to talk to readers. The event will feature a 15 minute interview, an interactive audience activity and live Q&A, where Louie will share jokes, insights into her process, and hints about future books! You can be assured that it will be an interactive hour, and may include drawing, writing, dressing up or even dancing! There will be books on sale so you can have the opportunity to meet the author and get your book signed. Secure your tickets today and celebrate with us as we mark 50 years of Calibre Audio, bringing books to life for all. About Louie Stowell Louie was born in London and has lived there ever since, except for a short stint in Watford to study advertising. Louie Stowell started her career writing carefully-researched books about space, ancient Egypt, politics and science but eventually lapsed into just making stuff up. She likes writing about dragons, wizards, vampires, fairies, monsters and parallel worlds. She’s worked as a copywriter, cartoonist, PR and in-house non-fiction writer, and was Publisher at Ladybird/Penguin Random House before writing full-time.
Her debut, THE DRAGON IN THE LIBRARY, was published by Nosy Crow in 2019 and Walker Books in the US, followed by THE MONSTER IN THE LAKE in January 2020 and THE WIZARD IN THE WOOD in 2021. OTHERLAND, a standalone middle-grade novel, followed in 2021 with Nosy Crow. The first book in her new series with Walker Books, LOKI: A BAD GOD’S GUIDE TO BEING GOOD, was an instant #3 Sunday Times (UK) bestseller.
Louie grew up on a diet of Tolkien, “Doctor Who”, Ursula Le Guin, live action role play, “Just William”, 2000AD, Elfquest, John Christopher and Nicholas Fisk. She loves comics, science fiction, fantasy and anything funny. At university, she wrote her thesis on comics, and once won a prize for Anglo-Saxon. She likes woods, urban foxes and mythology. Louie lives in Hackney with her wife, Karen, her dog, Buffy, and a nameless creepy puppet that is probably cursed. About The Loki series Aimed at readers aged 8 -12 years these wry, witty and very funny diary-style stories are packed with doodles and comic strips about how the frustration trickster god Loki feels at having to live trapped in the body of a weedy eleven-year-old boy. The new book Loki: A Bad God's Guide to Making Enemies is out in September 2024. Loki's fourth doodle-packed diary in the number one best-selling series.
Loki has made a fair few enemies during his time in Asgard. Too many to count and certainly too many to remember. When the elf, Vinir beams Loki aboard his chariot and challenges him to a magical duel, Loki hasn't got a clue why.
Sweet talking his way out of a fight by pointing out there's little honour in duelling someone who can't remember how they wronged you, and even less in picking on a child, Loki is returned safely to school.
That is until Vinir shows up in child form, as resolute as ever about seeking that duel... and vengeance.
