To celebrate the tercentenary of the death in March 1726 of the great architect Sir John Vanbrugh it seems fitting for the BADA Friends to visit one of his most iconic buildings, Castle Howard. Recognised worldwide as the location for Brideshead Revisited and Bridgerton, Castle Howard has been home to nine generations of the Howard family since the building of the house in 1699. In 2025 it received two prestigious awards for the major restoration programme of its historic interiors - the Historic Houses Award and the Georgian Group Architecture Award. Prior to the visit guests will be able to access a Zoom lecture given by BADA Friends’ Northern Representative Nicholas Merchant, who will give viewers an introduction to the house and the work of Vanbrugh. Easily accessible from York railway station or by car this house is a gem in the Yorkshire countryside. If you want to make York your base for the weekend, then there is a lot to entertain you from Fairfax House to the newly refurbished Castle museum and the famous Shambles and Betty’s Tearooms not to mention BADA jewellery members Barbara Cattle. Alumni will have the chance to hit the ice in two alumni hockey games at the Lou & Gib Reese Ice Arena, and will also have the opportunity to watch the Denison University Men's Ice Hockey game later in the day. The weekend concludes with a special Hockey Alumni Banquet, where inductees of the Hockey Wall of Fame will be honored. For out-of-town alumni, a discounted hotel block has been reserved at the Courtyard Marriott in Newark, just a short drive from the campus. Rooms are available at a rate of $109 plus tax. For the past six months, Moseley Road Baths has collaborated with a talented group of young curators, aged 18-30. Together, they have crafted a truly innovative podcast called 'Bathcasts'. In each episode, one of the individuals connected to the historic baths is interviewed while sitting in one of its bathtubs. Our host, Rachel Baker, adds a touch of comedy as she delves into the lives, community spirit, and even the temperature of the water surrounding the interviewees. To enhance the podcast experience, we have commissioned original poetry and music from ten exceptional Birmingham artists, ensuring that each episode is a unique and captivating auditory journey. We invite you to listen to 'Bathcasts' while indulging in a relaxing bath at home, immersing yourself in water just like our interviewees.
