Le français suit ci-dessous Delve into the world of contemporary ballet with Voices Dance Project founder Jasmine van Schouwen. Built on the foundations of classical ballet technique, contemporary ballet uses elements of modern dance to free the dancer from the constraints of the rigorously defined body lines and forms found in traditional, classical ballet. In this 2-hour workshop, participants will be guided through a relaxing barre warmup, followed by simple exercises at the center, and will finish the evening by learning a short contemporary ballet routine. Together, we will explore new movement possibilities and relationships, while keeping things light and fun! ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Jasmine van Schouwen - Dancer, Choreographer, Founder of the Voices Dance Project Jasmine van Schouwen is a dance artist based in Gatineau, on unceded Algonquin Anishinaabe territory, with over 18 years of experience performing in classical ballets and contemporary works. Her choreographic works have appeared in music videos, commercials, and small stages across the city. Jasmine is the founder and Artistic Director of the Voices Dance Project, an interdisciplinary dance collective based in the National Capital Region. She is also currently working as a dancer and choreographer for emerging Outaouais dance company, PenserDanser. Her artistic discipline focuses on classical and modern ballet, floorwork, contemporary dance, and improvised dance. Jasmine is passionate about exploring how different dance styles can come together to deconstruct gender hierarchies and boundaries, and about using dance as a medium for developing deeper understanding of people and their stories. She is currently working on developing approaches and practices to democratize and de-colonize dance and to present it to audiences in unexpected contexts. ABOUT THE VOICES DANCE PROJECT The Voices Dance Project (VDP) is a non-profit dance collective that puts dancers at the center of artistic creation in a collaborative, supportive, and accessible environment. VDP aims to give independent dancers a space to explore choreography and expression. The project enables dancers to workshop new choreographic works, to think critically about existing dance structures and institutions, and to train and perform on stage or in multimedia productions. Through these performances, VDP hopes that artists will be able to develop experience, connect with artists from a variety of backgrounds, and discover new ways of expressing themselves. The project specifically offers a creative space to dancers with experience training and performing in ballet, modern dance, contemporary dance, indigenous dance styles and traditional dance styles from around the world. The project provides dancers of all body types, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities, genders and sexual identities a platform for their works to be experienced, unfettered, by audiences in the National Capital Region. Interested in joining the project?
