This special, free event hosted by Liverpool John Moores University comprises three performances through the course of the afternoon. Your booking provides access to all three. Capacity is strictly limited and registration closes at midday on Friday 31 January. Tea/coffee will be provided at the venue. 1.30pm - I Have a Beetle in My Black Box by Fanchon Frolich A premiere and a work in progress of the first act of Fanchon Frohlich’s play. Fanchon was a prolific painter and collaborative artist who was also married to the Jewish physicist Herbert Frohlich. Following her death a couple of scripts were uncovered in her belongings including this curious play. There's a Beetle in my Black Box reflects the dialogue of contemporary realist playwrights of the 60s but is also a surreal, poetic and at times angst ridden text, connecting art and science as a mirror of Fanchon's life. 2.45pm - Mr Moonlight by Kim Millar In the sixties, stars didn’t come bigger than Frankie Vaughan. Number one hits, movies with Marilyn Monroe. A star at the very height of his power, a long way from his roots as Frank Abelson born in Liverpool in 1928. A visit to Easterhouse in Glasgow led him to intervene between police and gang leaders to bring about a knife amnesty on a beleaguered housing estate. Set in the Barrowlands Ballroom, Mr Moonlight explores how Vaughan’s relationship with Glasgow might have been born. This is a script in hand reading. 4.00pm - One Hope Place: A Love Story A chance to relive your school days as the building comes alive with stories of Liverpool’s Hebrew School. Based on interviews with pupils who attended the school and archive research, One Hope Place is an event celebrating the life of the school over its 100 years in Hope Place. What stories will you discover and what characters will you encounter as you journey through the school? Information Source: eventbrite

Over half a century of despotic dictatorship in Syria culminated in 14 years of brutal civil war. What exacerbates the situation in Syria is that the former regime has expertly exploited religious, sectarian, regional and other divisions in Syria to package itself as an alternative for majority oppression against the minorities. Last year I ran a project that utilised applied/participatory theatre to create an outlet for young men and women through which to share aspirations and concerns in exceptionally oppressive and dangerous circumstances. This was done secretively and under multiple covers with local collaborators, as I’m not allowed into the country. This talk shares that experience and how I intend to use it in post-Asad Syria as a basis for further projects that utilise theatre as a medium for socio-political dialogue and change. Aqeel Abdulla is a lecturer in Culture, Media and Creative Industries at King’s College London. He has a PhD in Drama from the University of Exeter in 2016 and worked there as a lecturer in Drama for 5 years before joining KCL in 2021. Aqeel’s research has focused on three major areas: representation and self-representation of Arabs and Muslim women in British theatre, applied drama as a tool for social change, and performative intangible cultural heritage in the Middle East. Aqeel is also the Deputy Director of KCL’s Sanctuary Programme. Information Source: Research @ Central | eventbrite

Victor Patrascan 🇷🇴 • VictorPatrascan.com • @VictorPatrascan Victor Pãtrãşcan is an eccentric stand up comedian and outrageous social commentator from Romania. He’s been on tour consistently for the last 5 years with his self-produced shows all over Europe and Asia. He is now on probably the longest and most extensive self-produced comedy show ever in the world. He honed his craft for joke writing in the London comedy circuit where he lived until 2020. Since then he has lived on the road and has been constantly on tour. In some places, such as Kazakhstan, Kosovo, or in remote fishing villages in Iceland, he was the first comedian to ever perform comedy in English. Victor has told his jokes in Japan, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Greece, Austria, Singapore, Turkiye, Sweden, France, Serbia, Switzerland, Georgia, Finland, Belgium, Iceland, Ukraine, Albania, Malta, Serbia, Spain, Estonia, Italy, Cyprus (both sides), Ireland, South Korea, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Kosovo, Gibraltar, Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic, Iceland, Norway, Slovakia, very close to the Vatican, Thailand, Georgia, UK, Slovenia, Armenia, Croatia, Poland, Latvia, North Macedonia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, UAE, Denmark, Moldova, Vietnam, Hungary, and even Bulgaria. In 2024 alone, Victor self-produced 298 shows and performed to over 35,000 people on 2 continents, in 48 countries and 114 cities. Victor’s style is distinctly shaped by his peculiar life as a vagabond. Victor weaves this unique experience into his stand up as he has become somewhat of a sponge absorbing the intricacies of European culture and politics. While he jokes about the stereotypes and misconceptions of every country, he also highlights the silliness of our presumed differences in an effort to assert our humanity.
