Safe sex: the comeback of sexually transmitted diseases | Museum of Natural History Vienna

Jun 3, 2025–Apr 18, 2026 (UTC+1)
Vienna
Exhibitions
The exhibition not only shows the history of STIs, but also refers to current topics such as AIDS therapy and HPV vaccination, the first “vaccination against cancer”. Different clinical pictures are shown and explained using historical specimens. As many STIs are now easily treatable, a special focus is placed on education and prevention - according to the motto: treatment is good, prevention is better. As sexually transmitted infections have social consequences beside physical symptoms, this topic is also covered. Stigmatization and exclusion should not really play a role in diseases today, yet those affected are still discriminated against in the 21st century. STIs can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status. Knowledge about STIs not only useful to you, but also to others.

Turning Heads. Coining a Fashion | Imperial Treasury Vienna

Nov 11, 2025–Sep 6, 2026 (UTC+1)
Vienna
Exhibitions
Coins are among the smallest portraits in the world. These masterpieces of miniature art show busts or faces of prominent individuals in amazing detail and usually in profile. In many cases, the diminutive nature of the coin portraits necessitates the use of highly symbolic visual imagery. Yet, the hairstyles, clothes and accessories are more than just aesthetic embellishments, they reflect the zeitgeist and offer a window into the culture of ages past. The exhibition Turning Heads (Kopf & Kragen) presents over a hundred numismatic portraits from a cultural and historical perspective, casting light on fashion and lifestyle from several millennia.

Leiko Ikemura Motherscapes | Albertina

Nov 14, 2025–Apr 6, 2026 (UTC+1)
Vienna
Exhibitions
This exhibition at the ALBERTINA presents a crosssection of the oeuvre of Leiko Ikemura (*1951 in Tsu, Japan). Known for poetically powerful works in which she unites Western and Eastern influences, this Japanese-Swiss artist devotes herself to themes such as femininity, transformation, and identity. Ikemura translates the fragility and mystery of human existence into images at once universal and deeply personal. Her oeuvre stands out for its surrealist visual language and ranges from luminous paintings to reduced drawings and on to sculptures done in glazed terracotta, glass, and bronze. A central aspect of her output is the close linkage of humankind and nature, expressed not only in the melding of body and landscape but also via the inclusion of hybrid beings.

Copperplate engravings for playing cards, multi-part three-dimensional objects of monumental proportions, and rarely shown works reveal the entire range of this one-of-a-kind collection and artistic genre.
