Running
Ballymuns Backyard Ultra – Event Rules Welcome to Ballymun’s Backyard Ultra! Here’s a breakdown of how the race works: The course is a 500m asphalt track where each competitor must complete 13 loops (plus few meter s) to total the 6.7 kms needed to complete the Yard and each runner has 1 hour to complete it. Runners must return to the start line before the next hour begins to continue. The race repeats every hour, on the hour, until only one runner is left standing. The final runner must complete one extra loop after all others have stopped to be declared the winner. If no one finishes that last loop, there is no winner. Key rules to keep in mind: 1. Complete each loop within the hour. 2. All runners start at the same time each hour—no early or late starts. 3. No outside assistance is allowed during the loop (only between loops). 4. If you don’t make it back to the start line in time for the next lap, you’re out. This is a true test of endurance—physically and mentally. The goal is to see how far you can push yourself. Good luck, and let’s find out who will be the last one standing at Ballymun’s Backyard Ultra! Information Source: Ger Prendergast | eventbrite

DABF24 Talk: NIVAL presents 'Books that don’t fit' | Studio 6, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios

Nov 26, 2024 (UTC+0)
Dublin
Arts
Literary Arts
One of the most common questions that artists encounter when they approach the book form is: what is an artist's book? Are there limits to observe, or conditions that 'break' the idea of what is acceptable as a book? What should artists consider in terms of production, price and distribution methods when creating a work? Or should these factors play a part at all in the rebellious world of experimental book-making? This talk will look at how practical aspects of designing making, selling, and displaying an artist book are woven into the overall concept of the work. The National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL) is an initiative of NCAD in partnership with the Arts Council of Ireland. Since 1997, NIVAL has become the foremost centre for the documentation of contemporary art and design in Ireland and holds arguably the largest public-access artist book collection in Ireland. Assistant Manager, Ruth Hallinan, has spent fifteen years working in Irish publishing. She was named as one of the 150 most influential people in publishing by The Bookseller in 2021 and 2022. Dublin Art Book Fair (DABF)is a centre for contemporary artist books offering unique artist publications and titles from creative, small and independent publishers, both Irish and international. Join Ingrid Lyonsand visual artistsLiliane Puthod and Ella Bertilsson as they discuss the place of storytelling and the embodiment of fiction in their practice. As they reminisce with good stories, they explore how people share anecdotes for all sorts of reasons; to make each other laugh, to process life experiences, to reminisce. They explore how storytelling helps us find common ground, connects us with with universal tropes and creates a collective consciousness. The three speakers find common ground in the distillation of personal experience and weaving of narrative threads through their use of materials, symbolic analogy and mise en scène, and how these sensibilities are used to build of fictional worlds. Through this distillation and fictionalisation in their creative practices, they take fragments of life, thoughts, dreams, and desires to communicate a vision and mediate with the world of otherness through storytelling. Maybe you’ll be moved to share your favourite ice-breaker. An art and visual culture specialist, Ingrid Lyons writes for several leading art journals in Ireland as well as galleries, art institutions and artists. Through her fiddle playing, she uncovers the rich heritage of Irish creativity, poetry and oral storytelling, while remaining close to the exceptional fiddle players who have personally mentored her. Liliane Puthod works with sculpture, installation, drawings and site-specific interventions to investigate the archaeology of everyday consumables buried within commodified gestures, trades and times. She has just completed a major solo work, Beep Beep as part of Longest Way Round, Shortest Way Home, commissioned by Temple Bar Gallery + Studios for Dublin Port and supported by The Arts Council Project Award. Ella Bertilsson’s practice combines elements of sculpture, video, performance, drawing, painting, and sound into staged installations, as a form of enquiry into bizarre and quotidian experiences and events that shape our character and define our identity. Selected solo exhibitions include: The Horse, Dublin (2025); Ballina Art Centre, Mayo (2024); The Dock, Leitrim (2023-24); and The Complex, Dublin (2022). This event is part of the extended programme of Dublin Art Book Fair (DABF). Join DABF Guest Curator Adrian Duncan in Studio 6 for readings and a conversation about the recent work of poet and fabulist Nidhi Zak/Aria Eipe. Taking a selection of poems from her critically acclaimed collection Auguries of a Minor God, Adrian and Nidhi will consider these poems as not just containing narrative and sense, but also shape and form. Identifying particular words from the poetry, the talk will look at how words can perform as objects or hinges within each poem’s flux of meanings. The talk will be followed by a short Q&A. Nidhi Zak/Aria Eipe's first poetry collection Auguries of a Minor God, was published with Faber & Faber in 2021. A Next Generation Artist with the Arts Council of Ireland, she serves on the Expert Advisory Committee to Culture Ireland. In 2023, she was appointed the Rooney Writer Fellow at Trinity College Dublin, and guest editor of Poetry Ireland Review. In these seven stories, Choi writes in a precise and unembellished style, to portrait the lives of young women in South Korea. The intimate is shown against sometimes a very complex political backdrop, but in a hopeful tone. In the title story, a friendship between an exchange student and her host sister follows them from adolescence to adulthood. In 'A Song from Afar', a young woman grapples with the death of her lover, travelling to Russia to search for information about the deceased. In 'Secret', the parents of a teacher killed in the Sewol ferry sinking hide the news of her death from her grandmother. Toji (토지) Book Club aims to explore Korean culture through novels and short stories to better understand the country's recent history, society dynamics and of course to enjoy the exceptional contemporary literature coming from South Korea. We have borrowed our name from Park Kyung-Ri’s novel, because we would like Toji to be a space to discover more about South Korea paying special attention to the female prospective. Art Walk is a regular free guided tour introducing contemporary art in Temple Bar, hosted by Temple Bar Gallery + Studios. For Dublin Art Book Fair, Art Walk takes the book as the focus for the tour. Booksellers will introduce their shop and selected books from their collections, including books reflecting on this year's DABF theme Fictions: The makings of other worlds. Meet at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios for an introduction to Dublin Art Book Fair, then begin a walk through Temple Bar to discover the best of bookshops and book sellers in the area. Event location and tour route information: A member of our team will be present to welcome you at our street-facing gallery. We will walk approximately five minutes between each venue. The walk will be through a busy pedestrianised area with mixed cobbled and sometimes uneven surfaces. All venues will be on ground level or accessible via a lift. The introductions will be standing but with seating available. Dublin Art Book Fair is Ireland’s leading art book fair and centre for artist books. Taking place in Temple Bar Gallery + Studios over ten days, DABF champions small, creative and independent publishers, both Irish and international and artist books. DABF24is proudly sponsored by Henry J Lyons and supported by Dublin UNESCO City of Literature. Information Source: Temple Bar Gallery + Studios | eventbrite
