Musical Arts
On a magical night at Nectar’s in Burlington, Vermont in December of 2018, three musical masters—Russ Lawton, Scott Metzger and Ray Paczkowski—came together with alchemical synthesis, and created a fresh, so-tight-it's-free sound, permeated with technical prowess and a deep-pocket punch. The packed house fortunate enough to be in attendance that night witnessed the birth of something very special. The following spring, the trio took the name LaMP by combining the first letters of each members’ surname, and reconvened back in Vermont at Sugarhouse Soundworks for an intense recording session with sound engineer Roger Stauss laying down tracks that would become their eponymous debut EP. Metzger, described by The Village Voice as “…an ace guitarist of a thousand styles,” and a full-time member of the beloved Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, tested the decades-strong synergy between Lawton and Paczkowski forged from their time playing with Trey Anastasio Band and their duo project Soule Monde. It resulted in seven tracks crackling with energy and soul. The melodic and harmonic interplay between Paczkowski’s swirling organ and clavinet dancing with Metzger’s acrobatic melodies on telecaster, driven by Lawton's unflappable backbeat, produced a record that will stand the test of time. Ever since—as the three members busy schedules have allowed—LaMP has prioritized bringing the music to the people with shows across the East Coast. As word has spread and crowds have grown with each subsequent tour, it’s become clear that LaMP will be a musical force to be reckoned with for the foreseeable future. Oobleck, founded in 2008, is an original, analog funk band out of the Capital Region of NY. Known regionally for inciting dance parties wherever they land, they boast a big, in your face sound inspired by New Orleans street music. It’s a melee of horns, super heavy drums and bass and your favorite type of chunky guitar riffing that leaves your bum shaking and your face grinning. Join the Queer Men's Coffee Klatch @ Wylde Coffee House before this event, 10am-12pm and the Queer Men's Walking Group that will meet at 12pm at Wylde Coffee House at 35 S 3rd St, Hudson, NY 12534 to walk to the gallery on Warren Street, or just join us at the Gallery at 12:30pm Joe Wheaton’s unique sculptural designs welded from dark, oxidized brass or brilliant silver steel showcase a contradictory set of relationships; “beautiful yet menacing, “threatening yet delicate” as described by the artist. Wheaton builds his metal compositions using a language of strokes and patterns. Geometric spears, disks and quadrangles alternate with wispy, sharp edged lines that trail off quietly to an undefined point. This visual sweep can be likened to the art of calligraphy, echoing the artist’s interest in early Asian arts and ceramics, as well as printmaking.Joe Wheaton, whose studio is in Beckett, MA, has worked as a sculptor for 30 years. Most recently, he has been making sculpture and projection experiences showcased nationally, as well as creating two dimensional images taken from the projections. Vincent Pomilio: While spending time in Cape Hatteras about ten years ago, I was invited into a neighbor‘s home and the main wall in the living room was covered with framed photographs, objects, bric-a-brac, small paintings and all manner of kitschy memorabilia. When I asked about it, my host told me it was their Memory Wall. Every picture or object had to do with their travels and family, friends, pets, holidays, etc. A travelogue of their lives all displayed on the main wall of the house. Years later, I remembered this wall and thought that it might be interesting to create my own Memory Wall based on my thoughts about painting, nature, wall construction, (stone walls, brick walls, weathered walls, ancient walls), etc. This is a very open-ended painting exercise and one that I could work on for a long time. The first “Memory Wall” painting acts as a visual encyclopedia of shapes, compositions, color juxtapositions, etc. I have always been interested in wall surfaces and how they are constructed. I studied the artisan craft of Venetian Plaster in Italy and have spent years practicing this craft in people’s homes. I take containers of mixed, pigmented plaster into my studio and use it in my work. I have developed a type of fresco painting using Stucco Veneziano. These abstract compositions are done in multiple layers of overlapping colors made of pigmented plaster and marble dust and rubbed with refined beeswax. I then burnish the surface to bring out the stone like quality and seal in the color. My imagery is never far from the real world whether it be man-made or from nature.
