Playwriting 1: Mastering the Basics - a six(6) week course offered as part of the 2026 Theatre Skills Education Program SUMMARY Learn the basics of playwriting with teachers Michael K. Potter and Fay Lynn: character, story, speech, and theme – along with the skills of providing and receiving constructive practical feedback. Classes consist primarily of active writing exercises and discussions about what participants have written that week. There is homework (but it’s fun) – participants will write and submit several pages each week. ​Ideal for both new and experienced writers who want to hone their playwriting skills.​ DATES Six(6) weeks. Sundays, May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; June 7, 2026 TIME 12:30-2:30 PM (2 hours per class, 12 hours total) LOCATION The Shadowbox Theatre (1501 Howard ave. - corner of Howard & Shepherd -- Windsor, ON) DEADLINE TO REGISTER: 1 May 2026 @ 11:59pm ABOUT THE TEACHERS Michael K. Potter is an award-winning writer, educator, producer, director, and occasional actor. For more than 25 years, as both a teacher and a researcher, he’s been helping people become better teachers and storytellers. Michael’s produced plays include The Worst Thing I Ever Did (written with Fay Lynn and Michael O’Reilly, 2017), Another Fucking Christmas Play: A Fucking Musical (written with Fay Lynn and Michael O’Reilly, 2018), Puppets in the Hands of a Malevolent God (2025), and the upcoming play Innocence (scheduled for February 2027). You might also know him as the Managing Director of Post Productions, Co-Owner/Operator of The Shadowbox Theatre, and the co-founder of the Windsor-Essex Playwriting Contest, for which he has served as coordinator and judge since 2018. In 2022 Michael received an award for Performing Arts Leadership in Theatre from Windsor Endowment for the Arts. In 2021 he co-created and co-wrote the comedy series (up)Staged (with Fay Lynn and Joey Ouellette) – and served as executive producer and co-director when it was filmed in 2024. As a teacher what’s most important to Michael are ensuring that all students enjoy their experience while reaching their potential. Fay Lynn is an award-winning multi-disciplinary artist with over 20 years experience in the theatre industry. Artistic Director of Post Productions, and Co-Owner/Operator of The Shadowbox Theatre, she has spent the better part of her life on and around a stage as a writer, producer, director, stage manager, set designer, technician, and actor – among many other things. Fay’s produced plays include The Worst Thing I Ever Did (written with Michael K. Potter and Michael O’Reilly, 2017), Another Fucking Christmas Play: A Fucking Musical (written with Michael K. Potter and Michael O’Reilly, 2018), and Traffic (2024). In 2018 she co-founded the Windsor-Essex Playwriting Contest, for which she has served as co-coordinator and judge ever since. Tales of the Town A Monthly Open Mic Storytelling Night Share a story or witness one. Tales of the Town is a space where every voice has a place. Real stories. Real people. What Is Tales of the Town? Tales of the Town is a monthly, in-person open mic storytelling night held on the first Thursday of every month . It’s a space created for honest human stories — the kind that don’t need to be polished, impressive, or wrapped up neatly. This is not a performance. This is not about being confident. This is about presence, voice, and community. You can come to: share a true story listen and witness others or simply sit in the room and take it in Listening counts. Being there counts. What Makes This Night Different Tales of the Town isn’t a typical open mic. There’s: no pressure to perform no feedback or fixing no expectation to be funny, profound, or polished Stories can be: short or unfinished quiet or expressive funny, tender, or still forming This is a space where honesty matters more than delivery.
