On 6 June 1944 when the allied armies landed on D-Day, the Second World War had already lasted almost five years. Yet many of the British and American troops who invaded Normandy were virgin soldiers, never before committed to battle. They quit summer England to face within hours a storm of machine-gun and mortar fire. They witnessed scenes, above all of sudden death, such as no exercise had prepared them for. In Sword, veteran chronicler of war Max Hastings explores with extraordinary vividness the actions of the Commando brigade, Montgomery’s 3rd Infantry and 6th Airborne divisions on and around a single British beach. He describes their frustrations, hopes, loves and fears through the apparently interminable years training and preparing in England, then their triumphs and tragedies on the beach and beyond. Here are the airborne assaults on the Caen Canal bridge and Merville Battery, the battles on the shoreline and against the German strongpoints inland, narrated and explained with all the insights that Hastings’ decades of study, veterans’ interviews and new archive research enable him to deploy. The book offers a searching analysis of why British troops did not reach Caen on 6 June, as Montgomery had promised Churchill that they would – and the story of the brigadier who was sacked for that failure. There is also a host of personal portraits of key figures from commando leader Lord Lovat, famously brave but supremely arrogant, to tank colonel Jim Eadie, whose tanks of the Staffordshire Yeomanry repulsed a panzer division in the last hours of 6 June, and some of the humbler participants to whom extraordinary things happened. This is D-Day as you have never read the story told before, with the blend of narrative, analysis and human insight that made Max Hastings’ last book Operation Biting, like many of his earlier works, a Sunday Times No.1 bestseller. Many say that Chantel McGregor is the best female lead guitarist in the country and what's more she has a stunning voice. Along with her current band members, Colin Sutton on bass and Thom Gardner on drums, this awesome power trio plays an eclectic mix of blues-based tunes, all composed by Chantel. Ranging from traditional blues numbers to a much more raunchy blues rock style, her music has some of the most exciting lead breaks you could wish for. Local author Roger Hunt has had a lifelong interest in history. This, his first book, is a historical novel set during the Napoleonic Wars, inspired by remarkable, little-known events. The story centres around two unusual, flawed characters - James Roberston and Jacques Marquet. It is 1808. Napoleon is nearing the zenith of his power. Desperate to dent his supremacy, the British government sends James Robertson, a middle-aged, overweight monk on a secret mission to persuade a Spanish general to betray Napoleon. Meanwhile. Jacques Marquet, a passionate supporter of the Revolution, is appointed chief spy-catcher for northern Germany, despite his career being blighted by his aristocratic birth. Landed on the north German coast, Robertson narrowly avoids capture. In Hamburg he is spotted by Marquet but on this occasion managed to evade him. The monk discovers that the Spanish general and his troops have moved into Denmark and travels north. A desperate game of cat and mouse then unfolds as Robertson tries to persuade the general to defect, while all the time avoiding capture by Marquet. The journey will take him through Denmark, Germany and into Bavaria as the Scottish monk continues his fight against Napoleon. Join us for a convivial evening over a glass of wine (or soft drink) as Roger discusses his new book and his journey to being published followed by a Q&A, and book signing. Clarice Cliff: Sunshine on a Plate ! Clarice Cliff is of course a famous name in the antiques world and since the Hungerford Arcade is the UK's biggest and best antiques centre, Hungerford would seem to be a good fit from a marketing point of view, e.g. good promotional opportunities in the arcade. In addition to that connection the play features Hungerford character actor Nicholas Lumley who is also an auctioneer. The play, which includes images of some of Clarice's most iconic work, recently sold out at all 3 of its preview venues (The Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre, Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery and The Irving Studio at The Everyman Cheltenham) which is very encouraging in the current tough economic climate. Building on this success I'm planning a small tour in summer 2025 and ideally looking for dates between the end of May and the end of July. Clarice Cliff was an extraordinary woman who embodied the new modern spirit of the 1930's with her vibrant and joyful designs. Her work is still widely collected today and regularly features on Bargain Hunt, Antiques Road Show etc. Born into a poor family in a world where a woman's place was very definitely in the home, her artistic vision, colourful and innovative designs and sheer determination saw her become the first female art director in the potteries. “I was completely engrossed”, “A fascinating story, wonderfully performed.“ “Totally captivating. . . revealed Clarice the woman as well as Clarice the artist.” (Audience feedback) Information Source: Arts for Hungerford | eventbrite

All kinds of bubbles, in a bath! Ok, so not an actual plumbed-in bath, but a tub big enough to hold every single kind of fizz imaginable. We're talking Champagne, English, Prosecco (sorry!), Cap Classique, Pet-Nat & Method Ancestrale, Blanc de Blancs, Blanc de Noirs, New World, Old World, outta this world..! If it has bubbles, it'll be in the bath! And we'll be tasting the lot. Exploring the diffrences, the quality markers, and ultimately, where your hard-earned cash is best spent when it comes to popping a cork. And what better venue than the award-winning Winding Wood Vineyard? Vines, wines, and sunshine (fingers crossed) - is there a more perfect way to spend a summer's evening? N.B. Ticket price an extra fiver than usual as you'll be getting lots more wine! N.B. part deux: Please attend fully clothed - the only thing going bathing is the wine! 'A lovely memoir. Charming, intelligent, inventive, full of sly humour and unexpected connection. A wonderful portrait of an age, and of a writer.' RORY STEWART #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of Politics on the Edge 'I gulped it down . . . Utterly fascinating. This will resonate with many people.' DAVID KYNASTON Historian and author of The City of London In Fires Which Burned Brightly , Faulks, a reluctant memoirist, offers readers a series of detailed snapshots from a life in progress. They include a post-war rural childhood – 'cold mutton and wet washing on a rack over the range' – the booze-sodden heyday of Fleet Street and a career as one of the country's most acclaimed novelists. There are not one, but two daring escapes from boarding school; the delirium of a jetlagged American book tour; the writing of Birdsong in his brother's house in 1992; and memorable trips across the channel to France. Politics, psychiatry and frustrated ventures into the world of entertainment are analysed with patience and rueful humour. The book is driven by a desire 'to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.' It ends with a tribute to Faulks's parents and a sense of how his own generation was shaped by the disruptive power of war and its aftermath. Sharply perceptive and alive with a generous wit, Fires Which Burned Brightly is a work of subtle yet profound intelligence and warmth. Sebastian Faulks will be talking to Rebecca Fletcher in the Town Hall at 7pm, before taking questions from the audience. Information Source: Hungerford Bookshop | eventbrite
