Couched/Laid Bayeux Stitch Workshop | Quaker Tapestry Museum

Couched/Laid Bayeux Stitch Workshop | Quaker Tapestry Museum

May 24, 2025 (UTC+1) ENDED
Kendal
Cultural Experiences
Often known as Bayeux stitch, laid and couched work was used all over Europe throughout the middle ages, often for very large pieces of embroidery/ Learn this fun easy technique using naturally dyed wool. There will be a choice of simple designs on the day, including dragons and mad medieval rabbits. The Bayeux stitch is an Anglo-Saxon variation of an ancient technique called the laid work. The Bayeux Stitch is economical in terms of the threads used as it leaves little thread on the reverse of the fabric. While applying this stitch on embroidery, the patterns were outlined with the Stem Stitch first. £20 materials fee to be paid in cash on the day To book, visit: https://www.quaker-tapestry.co.uk/events/couched-laid-bayeux-embroidery-workshop/ Information Source: The Quaker Tapestry Museum | eventbrite

What does Wisdom mean to you? Is it something we are born with, or is it something we can nurture? Wisdom was one of the four cardinal virtues for the ancient Stoics, and its cultivation was an essential part of the Stoic path. In this half-day course, we will contemplate, through discussion and guided meditation, our understanding of Wisdom, we will consider what it meant to the ancient Stoics, and then we will explore ways in which we can cultivate it for modern living. Elizabethan theatre is flourishing. But will a brand-new Tudor musical romp, in which Good Queen Bess takes to the stage herself, be the making of this heroine or spell the beginning of her downfall? The stage is set for regicidal rivalries, devious dramatics, and plotting playwrights. Beset by misunderstandings and a script that…let’s just say…needs some work, this production promises to be largely historical, always hysterical. As the old saying goes…thy show must go-eth on! ★★★★★ – “So entertaining…laugh-out-loud funny” ★★★★★ – “Riotously fun. Hugely enjoyable” ★★★★★ – “The ultimate British theatrical experience” – Hastings Independent Press ★★★★★ – “Great fun for the whole family…my kids are still talking about it!” On Friday 27th June , join us at Levens Hall . Bring your own cushions, and camping-chairs and join us on our 10th anniversary open-air adventure. Come prepared for the weather - the performance will continue come rain come shine! This performance is an outdoor performance. We recommend that you bring blankets/chairs/cushions etc. to sit on. Come prepared for the weather with warm coats and waterproofs etc, as the performance will continue come rain come shine! We ask that you don’t bring umbrellas as these can obscure the view for other people in the audience. 7pm start time, picnics welcom from 6pm. The performance will last approximately 100 minutes (+ a 20 minute interval). Join us for an introduction to the gentle art of English Paper Piecing (EPP). This traditional hand-sewn patchwork technique originated in England in the late 1700s. Also known as 'Mosaic Patchwork', EPP is one of the oldest patchwork techniques that has survived through the ages. EPP patchwork is a highly portable craft which you can carry with you to indulge in some mindful sewing anytime, anywhere! It's also a great way to use up fabric scraps! Jane will introduce you to the EPP method, which involves stabilising a fabric patch by fixing it to a paper template (the 'paper piece') and sewing the stabilised patches together into larger patterns, or quilt blocks. Then together we will put your new skills into practice with a simple project to take home. This relaxed pace, small group workshop is suitable for beginners.
