Cultural Experiences
Join us to mark the anniversary of one of the most significant books about Highland history. 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of James (Jim) Hunter’s The Making of the Crofting Community , and we will be gathering scholars, creative practitioners, and activists from around the world to commemorate this landmark book and Jim Hunter’s broader career. Together with the likes of The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil , Runrig, Highland and Islands Enterprise and the establishing of what was to become UHI, The Making has transformed lives and led directly to the ongoing cultural revival in the Highlands. Jim’s writing, wider career and campaigning was a core element in the rise of the community land buyout movement which has transformed social, economic and cultural lives in the contemporary Highlands and Islands. Our gathering marks the significance of The Making and also sets the agenda for key debates in our region about land, people, communities and the social, cultural, ecological and economic challenges that we face. Speakers include Ailsa Raeburn, Andrew Mackillop, Col Gordon, Gemma Smith, Iain MacKinnon, Mairi McFadyen, Raghnaid Sandilands, Annie Tindley, Cáit O’Neill McCullagh, David Taylor, Ewen Cameron, Domhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart and Juliette Desportes. The conference will feature specially commissioned artwork by Historylinks museum's Young Curators' Club, a dinner and entertainment with music and poetry. Information Source: eventbrite

Sports & Fitness Running
Run the classic Ring of Steall with this guided skyrun from Girls on Hills The Ring of Steall is a classic round of four Munros above Glen Nevis, Lochaber. The route involves two fantastic and technical (grade 1) ridges with views over Ben Nevis. In recent years, the loop has gained worldwide popularity on account of the Salomon Ring of Steall Skyrace which used to take place over these mountains (but this event is no more!) The classic 16km/1700m round starts and finishes in Glen Nevis and includes all the best parts of the longer/previous skyrace route. Despite still being the official race recce provider for Skyline Scotland *, this guided skyrun from Girls on Hills is not associated any skyrace and is therefore not a race recce. Instead our group of runners will enjoy a sociable and relaxed journey around this scenic route, with plenty of walking, plus stopping for photos and lunch along the way (weather permitting!) There are no prerequisites but you should have a good level of hill fitness and some fell running experience (ideally your would be capable of comfortably running 10km on hilly trails) to get the most out of this guided skyrunning experience. But you don't need to be fast! Upon booking you will receive a full kit list and details or where to meet your Girls on Hills guide. * Skyline Scotland will is set to return in 2025 (Septmber 20th) and will be based at Nevis Range, Fort William. Ask your Girls on Hills guide about the new races from Skyline Scotland or see our guided race recces online. We can't wait to show you this local favourite. It's gonna knock your socks off! Please note that the Girls on Hills Terms and Conditions are different from those of Eventbrite and our Cancellation Policy can be viewed via our website at www.girlsonhills.com/terms-and-conditions . Mixed Terrain adventure and family ride within the stunning Cairngorms TICKETS ALSO AVAILABLE ON THE DAY: Bikeathon at registration at Kingussie High School Tickets also availble at the school on the day. We are keeping the success of our mixed route running! The Kingussie Bikeathon is a family-friendly, fun cycling event. A bike based marathon along a marked and marshalled route in the stunning Cairngorms National Park. For over 30 years the Bikeathon has been a favourite date on the family calendar. With options of an advanced adventure route or the shorter family friendly route, there are options for all! We have decided to update to a mixed terrain ride to Glen Feshie and back. Starting at Kingussie High School, you will make your way up and past Ruthven Barracks and on towards Tromie Bridge. From here we will follow a mixed route of both tarmac and gravel through to Feshiebridge. Following a family friendly , low traffic route, we will then loop through the heart of the Cairngorms. The loop will bring us back through the magnificent caledonian pine forests of the Cairngorms, via hydration stations and feed stations, to bring us back into Kingussie. Finally finishing at the Duke of Gordon Hotel. After the popularity of the longer ride we will be running the more advanced gravel route for experienced riders again. Following the family ride to the feeding station, the adventure route will then strike off into the remote sections of the Cairngorms, sticking to gravel tracks through the mountains and forest to loop back and join the family ride on the way back to Kingussie. Those U14 will not be able to ride this route while those U16 must be accompanied by an adult. Ticket sales from this community event will raise funds for Kingussie High School*. We encourage participants to raise additional sponsorship for a cause, club or group of their choice. Registration will be open on the day from 9.30 am with the 'grand depart' at 10.30. Take as long as you wish to complete the route and enjoy one of our refreshment stops and entertainment along the way. We look forward to welcoming you to Cycle Friendly Kingussie for our 2026 Bikeathon. There is no parking availble at Kingussie High School, but there are various Public Car Parks availble throughout Kingussie. *Event entry fees in aid of Kingussie High School Parent Council, Scottish charity number SC045172. Walk the two most accessible of the Mamores Munro's; Stob Ban and Mullach nan Coirean with Girls on Hills. Stob Ban is one of the finest peaks in the Mamores, its quartzite summit giving magnificent views. A very fine ridge traverse links it to its westerly neighbour Mullach nan Coirean, giving an excellent circuit. Stob Ban includes a short section of scree and shattered rocky ridges followed by easier going terrain on Mullach nan Coirean, with some boggy ground on descent. This is a steep mountain walk, but with good paths for most of the route. A small amount of previous hill walking experience is required, however this is a much shorter and friendlier day than the neighbouring Ring of Steall Munros. We will move at an inclusive and sociable group pace, stopping for packed lunch, snacks and to take in the views along the way. Please come prepared to be on your feet for approximately up to 8 hours. Our professionally guided hikes are also the perfect opportunity to seek advice from an expert or voice any questions you might have, so that you can build mountain skills and grow your confidence on the move! Upon booking you will receive a full kit list and details or where to meet your Girls on Hills guide. We can't wait to show you this local favourite. It's gonna knock your socks off! *Weather-permitting we try to offer a hike over all 2 Munro summits. We also aim to lead two seprate groups, to allow for a range of pace on the hill (subject to numbers). Please note that the Girls on Hills Terms and Conditions are different from those of Eventbrite and our Cancellation Policy can be viewed via our website at www.girlsonhills.com/terms-and-conditions .
