Maps: Memories from the Second World War | National War Museum

Maps: Memories from the Second World War | National War Museum

Mar 9, 2024–Oct 4, 2026 (UTC)
Edinburgh
Exhibitions
Explore the creation and use of maps during the Second World War. Discover their use through personal stories, photography, and memorabilia. Between 1939 and 1945 over 3 billion maps were produced for the Allied, Soviet and German forces. Used to navigate the jungles of south-east Asia or for devising an escape plan, the maps on display are now mementoes. Maps kept alongside medals and photographs to say ‘I was there.' You'll find aerial photography, war diaries, and even a fashionable dress made from escape and evasion maps. The exhibition introduces us to a Prisoner of War, an RAF pilot, a Brigadier and an army chaplain through the maps they kept as a memory of their war service.

Catherine Opie | To Be Seen | National Galleries of Scotland: National

Aug 8–Nov 1, 2026 (UTC)
Edinburgh
Exhibitions
This exhibition will showcase nearly 80 portrait works by Catherine O'Pee, along with a selection of portraits from the National Collection of Scotland, prompting reflection on the subjects, motivations, and methods of portraiture. Viewers will have the opportunity to get up close to O'Pee's mentors and collaborators, the queer community, children, surfers, high school football players, and the political figures she portrays in her work, while also appreciating O'Pee's self-portraits. The exhibition will take viewers on a journey through the artist's 30-year career, exploring her interpretations of family, intimacy, and the home, as well as her reflections on politics, identity, and power structures. "Catherine O'Pee: Being Seen" will encompass the artist's first major work, "Being and Having" (1991), and her humanistic portraits of LGBTQ+ friends inspired by court painter Hans Holbein, culminating in her Baroque-style artist portraits. Opi's portrait works collectively construct a new narrative, challenging viewers to reflect on the most frequently depicted figures in artworks and those neglected groups.

Exhibitions
This room invites you to step inside the artist's studio: a place for creating, dreaming and thinking, where reality can be reimagined and transformed.Studios come in different shapes and sizes. From boat houses to seaside cottages and purpose-built environments, creative spaces are varied and unique. For many artists, their workspaces have also been dictated by circumstance, often marked by uncertainty and impermanence. The works on display give us a glimpse into the studio and the practical conditions of artmaking. They prompt us to consider how artists make work and how space can interact with and influence their materials and methods of making.

Get ready to dive deep into the realms beyond with a shamanic twist - it's all about astral travel and healing from within! Join Giada from School of Shamanism and Cori from Koa for a unique experiential workshop dedicated to understanding and exploring out-of-body states through the lens of traditional shamanic practice and trauma-informed care. Together, we hold space that is professional, qualified, and deeply supportive invitational rather than prescriptive, grounded rather than overwhelming. This immersive session weaves together nervous system practices with an introduction to the subtle realms, offering you a rare opportunity to explore the foundations of astral travel in a safe, held environment with two skilled practitioners. The workshop opens with a warm welcome by Giada and a clear exploration of the principles behind shamanic out-of-body experience: how consciousness shifts beyond the physical body, what the subtle layers of the self represent, and how shamans have navigated these realms for thousands of years. You’ll learn to distinguish between spontaneous out-of-body experiences, lucid states, and intentional shamanic journeying, with guidance on how to approach these practices safely and respectfully. Cori will guide you through a nourishing somatic practice rooted in grounding, interoception, and release. This is an invitation to slow down and reconnect with your body in a deeper, more compassionate way, to notice where you already hold resources within you, the places that feel steady, anchored, and safe. Through breath, gentle movement, and mindful awareness, we’ll soften what feels tight or held, and create space for release. Drawing on the energy of the summer solstice as our inspiration, we’ll open room for fresh energy, greater balance, and a more settled nervous system. At the end you’ll then be invited by Giada to try introductory techniques of astral travel designed to cultivate awareness, enhance energetic perception, and create the conditions for a gentle, controlled shift in consciousness. These practices are accessible to everyone, no prior experience needed. Who Is This For? This workshop is ideal for anyone curious about astral travel, drawn to shamanic spirituality, or seeking a deeper understanding of the non-ordinary dimensions of consciousness. Whether you’re a complete beginner or simply want to explore these realms in a grounded, supported way, this session offers practical tools and a first real step into a profound field of inner exploration.
