Join with others to enquire into the ideas that emerge when we look at art together. This will be an informal and in-depth discussion, drawing on the Graves Gallery permanent collection as a stimulus for philosophical enquiry. Everyone can philosophise – come ready to find more questions than you do answers! We will use the Philosophy for Communities (P4C) method, a structured but flexible process for a group to find and discuss a big question. P4C gets you thinking creatively, critically, collaboratively and with care; thinking and talking together to delve into ideas more deeply. The event will take place within PLURIVERSE, Chowdhary’s current exhibition at the Graves Gallery. This will be a special opportunity for Chowdhary to respond directly to the works around her and share an insight into the exhibition, with plenty of time for audience questions. Lubna Chowdhary has been shortlisted for the Jerwood Prize in Ceramics, the Annual Freelands Foundation Award, the Juda Foundation Award and the Paul Hamlyn Award. She has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, UK, PEER Gallery, London, UK and group exhibitions at Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE, and Hayward Gallery, London, UK. Her work has been included in the Kochi Biennale, India and the Islamic Art Biennale, Jeddah. In addition to her residency at the V&A, she has completed further artists residencies at Camden Arts Centre, IASPIS Stockholm and Mahler & Lewitt, Italy. She is represented by Jhaveri Contemporary. Emilia Terracciano is lecturer in modern art history, University of Manchester, UK. In 1929 John George Graves gave £30,000 to the construction of a new library with the condition that an art gallery would be built on the top floor, giving the gallery its name when it opened five years later. An avid art collector, he amassed an astounding 3000 pictures throughout his lifetime and gave 700 of those to the city collection. Join us at the Graves Gallery and find out about more about life, work and collection of JG Graves. The exhibition tells the story of a father and son from Sheffield whose passion for prints led them to develop an outstanding collection, including works by Jacques Callot, Rembrandt, Edouard Manet, Odilon Redon, and more. David Alston will chart their story began and share insights into works on display, with a specific focus on Odilon Redon. This is the second in a series of three talks exploring A Passion for Prints’ changing focus displays. This tour forms part of the programme of events complementing the exhibition A Passion for Prints: A Sheffield Collection, which continues at the Graves Gallery until December 2024. As Deputy Director of Arts for Sheffield City Council, David led the City Art Galleries in the 1990s, before becoming the Keeper of Art in the National Museum of Wales. He left Wales to become Galleries Director for the millennium project of The Lowry on Salford Quays, returning to Wales to be Arts Director for the Arts Council of Wales. He was awarded an MBE in 2020 for services to the Arts. His family base has been Sheffield since the 1980s when he arrived in the city to be the first Assistant Curator for the Ruskin Collection. Hear about how We are the Monument explores the ways in which the plinth can be seen as a social, political, and cultural symbol and encourages us to consider the significance of those represented on, or in opposition to, the plinth. On this tour Ling will discuss his curatorial choices, and newly commissioned work Monumentalise (2023), made in response to artworks and objects from Sheffield’s collections. The series was made during Ling’s residency at Sheffield Museums as part of the UAL: Decolonising Arts Institute 20/20 project.
