Details

"Against Everything: The Brothers Topol and the Second Generation of Dissent" is a thought-provoking talk that focuses on two influential figures from the Czech 1980s generation, Jáchym and Filip Topol. Jáchym, a renowned writer, and Filip, a talented musician, both played key roles in shaping Czech culture during this period. Filip, as the lead singer of the legendary band Psí vojáci (Dog Soldiers), even had the honor of performing their first concert for Havel himself. Meanwhile, Jáchym gained popularity as an author of unconventional novels and stories, as well as an editor for the underground periodical, Revolver Revue. Notably, Jáchym's apartment became a hub for dissident happenings. While both brothers embraced the role of dissidents and signed Charter 77, they held a unique perspective, rejecting the idea of a pre-political self and adopting an almost nihilistic stance against everything. This talk sheds light on the often overlooked second generation of dissent in Czechoslovakia, a generation that grew up in the aftermath of Charter 77 and navigated a different path compared to the earlier dissidents. Join esteemed Slavic Culture professor, Daniel W. Pratt, as he delves into the lives and work of the Brothers Topol and their contemporaries. This event will take place on November 16, 2023, at the Bohemian National Hall in New York City. Admission is free, and a suggested donation of $5.00 is greatly appreciated.
