Details

ClassicsFest presents an exclusive event, "Readings of Commended Entries", at the renowned Lit & Phil in Newcastle on March 8, 2024. This exciting cultural festival explores the voices of ancient Greeks and Romans through the perspectives of contemporary artists, thinkers, and academics. Curated by Cinzia Hardy in collaboration with the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University, ClassicsFest delves into the universal theme of women and love in the ancient world. The event showcases four contemporary retellings of Ovid's "Heroides" - a collection of poetic letters from female characters to mythical heroes. These dramatic monologues give voice to the side-lined heroines and offer a fresh perspective on well-known myths. With performances by professional actors, the readings captivate the audience, bridging the gap between ancient stories and present-day audiences. ClassicsFest is a pilot project that aims to establish a new cultural festival in North East England. It presents an open-access program featuring performances, presentations, and talks that shed light on the ancient world's rich heritage. Through the lens of modern-day artists, thinkers, and academics, ClassicsFest offers a unique interpretation of ancient Greek and Roman culture. Admission to this remarkable event is free, but booking is required. Donations to support the Lit & Phil's charitable endeavors are greatly appreciated. Join us at the Lit & Phil in Newcastle on March 8, 2024, to experience the captivating readings of these commended entries.
